Recruiting Berserkers
I heard you could recruit Beserkers from the Cannibal cages/poles. Some claiming to do so with a 20 - 30% success rate. However I have yet to get a single one successfully. I was wondering do you have to be shek to do this?

Mods I have are:
Nice Map
No female Muscle Definition
Wolf Headgear
And one I made to adjust the resistances for tin can and crab pants.

No female muscle definition breaks the interaction as shek only respect the strong. It's a known issue among cowards.

Very funny. The 'No female muscle definition' only swaps the normal map of the females. The NPCs cannot see that nor react to any texture change XD

What I could gather looking the Berserker dialogue files, they do not seem to have an semi-automatic join option after releasing from a cage (some NPCs join after release automatically).
But they do have a talk to the leader prompt, which lets you speak to the leader and if you choose right, you can get the leader to join. It is a bit long process, it involves 1) speak to leader 2) release the leader from cage 3) speak to leader again. The options you get depends on the personalities in your squad. All Berserkers are always of Maniacal compulsion.
The only prerequisite is that you are not enemies with Berserkers.

Technically if there was more than one member in the squad, you would then have a new leader and you could try it again.

Also, nothing prevents you from saving the game just before this, so you could reload if the Berserker does not join and try again. If one allows save-scumming in their games.

Or one can just get recruitable prisoners mod and make the statement "Might makes right" a good go. Cause according to the RP - A Berserker will join player if the character of the interaction is stronger that the berserker themselves. (Though you might need to get one in your cage)

When you free them, what kind of behavior do they perform?

Unlike most freed prisoners, Shek ones often have less randomness in their behavior. While there are many branching paths they can use through the dialog, they can be simplified to a few different possible results.

1. Talk to you immediately, where Honourable and Maniacal personality "recruitable" Shek can join immediately, all other personalities will run off on their own and not join. Same for if they are not "recruitable".

2. Follow, Honourable and Maniacal Shek can do this even if they are not "recruitable", all other personalities either must pass a "recruitable" check or simply can't follow. If a Shek follows, they are guaranteed to be willing to join after you escape, unlike most prisoners who only have like a 30% chance.

3. Run off on their own, mostly random if they do this, but can also happen as a result of failing "recruitable" or personality checks. But even a "recruitable" Shek with a valid personality may do this.

4. Attack you, this only happens if they hate you, or you put them in the cage yourself. So let other factions do the imprisoning.

You may have noticed the several mentions of a "recruitable" check. This checks the character's class and stats to see if they are valid recruits or not. Though as mentioned, Shek with certain personalities can override this in some cases.

The conditions are as follows:

Not be a Diplomat, Law Enforcer, Military, or Trader class character.

And

(Strength or Dexterity) + (Melee Attack or Martial Arts) + (Melee Defense or Dodge) must equal less than 75.

Ah I see so I've just been very unlucky. Every time I free them they will say a line either Hm, something about killing them all, or thank me and then run off.
