As the lead dev once said, Hivers are basically hard mode.
They start off strong because you can repair the damage and get them back into the fight quickly. Once you can't repair beyond a certain point though, their natural regen just wont be enough to keep up with an organic pawn.
I found an all skeleton squad to be painful to level too because once they would lose several fights, I would have to send another salvage crew in to carry off their broken husks to a skeleton bed. It's dumb stuff too like Skeleton #3 had his right arm hit so many times that you can repair it to -15, and it's going to take a week of game time to get back to 0 without a bed so he's useless now. Skeleton #2 gets a leg taken down to -20 w/ repairs and now you're whole skeleton crew limps along until you can find a bed or wait a year for him to regen to 0 naturally
You'll lose a lot of limbs but that means you can replace them with better parts.
You can always spend more time in areas with weaker foes than you normally would too.
So my advice is "basically the same things you usually do, but spend more time in places than you usually would to grind levels / money".
I think the main problem might be getting the hiver shirts early on - I'm assuming a modless playthrough and not allowing yourself to hire a human/shek to buy shirts for you. I guess xbows could become very useful for later on?
Just recruit hivers from anti-slavers to save you helluva of grinding time.
