Base placement
So I finally settled down somewhere, had awesome stone/Iron, 100% fertility, 70% water... Try to grow greenfruit and cotton and it's giving me 10% efficiency and refuses to grow.

Do I now have to move my base somewhere else? I can't make weapons anymore because I upgraded my smithy and it requires fabric now. I don't want to keep having to go and buy fabric, it's a pain in the arse.

How am I supposed to verify that my new base location has the ability to grow anything if it's telling me 100% fert when I prospect?

Certain crops grow better in certain enviroments. Currently there are 3 types: Arid, Green, and Swamp.

You can check the biome type in the prospecting menu. Fertility is just an overall stat that all 3 crop types need, but has no bearing on which one can grow there.

Alternatively you can research the hydroponics. If you have water you can grow with 100% anywhere. That is what I did up north where I dropped an outpost in what I deem "Spiderville." The place is dead excepty for ridiculous amounts of iron. Hydroponics for the win.

Oh yeah I'll just use that AI core that I had laying around haha...

Looks like I'm going on an adventure when I get home.

This game is always an adventure and look how little of the world we can explore right now! little less than 1/3rd?

Hydroponic is very expensive for a rather small return. Both in room and power. It's good as backup, but not as a primary production IMO, especially if all you have is cactus, and need it for everything else.
I made a village where I have both green and arid (I have both Vain and Border Zone in my town). Swamp is high enough (50% productivity I think). If I had to make a choice, I'd take green over the rest, you have more stuff there than anywhere else.

Yeah, I hear you with the expensiveness of the hydro techs. However, if you intend to make a small outpost it works well. One hydro hemp supplies enough to power three generators and and still max the fuel storage to 100. One storm and one tower with a close wall and I have access to all the resources of the area and keep all the food types indoors for when the cannibals, skelletons or spiders pay a visit.

I look at the hydo as a strategic plus. If you have access to fertile land and water though then you really dont need it.

(additional note: I am based up north so it works well due to all the critters)

I found myself an absolute gem of a backwoods place for a base. Water, fertility, stone and iron in hidden pockets strong enough for decent production and just outside...copper. Highly defensible with some advanced planning before plopping down walls. Right smack dab between Spiders, Fog, and Shrieking bandits. But only the crazies actually path by, and they're harmless. Shhh. Don't tell anyone. I sure won't. lol :-P

P.S. The draw back is being so far away from anything that resembles civilization. But, honestly, it can be a blessing.

You can make fabric from Hemp which is against the law in HN territory but I like being a rebel:steamhappy:

If you settle around Vain, you can find places between Vain and the Border zone. With copper, iron, stone, both green and arid fertility (and enough swamp). The border zone have winds to.
Also, you are close to the Hive villages, the HN, and Hub for trades of all sort.

Have you been moving water from your wells to the field? For some odd reason you can't draw water directly from lakes or rivers so you will still need well regardless of base location.

I normally build 2 towns - a early game area out of the way with iron copper arid 50% + water stone

then once I gather a larger team I move the base with pack animals full of building supplies and work on a much larger base that would never have been possible from roaming bandits or animals over running me - I am in middle of moving my 70 npc army into the edge of the fog lands and building a base there which is much larger much better planned and much more fun
