You can check the biome type in the prospecting menu. Fertility is just an overall stat that all 3 crop types need, but has no bearing on which one can grow there.
Looks like I'm going on an adventure when I get home.
This game is always an adventure and look how little of the world we can explore right now! little less than 1/3rd?
I made a village where I have both green and arid (I have both Vain and Border Zone in my town). Swamp is high enough (50% productivity I think). If I had to make a choice, I'd take green over the rest, you have more stuff there than anywhere else.
I look at the hydo as a strategic plus. If you have access to fertile land and water though then you really dont need it.
(additional note: I am based up north so it works well due to all the critters)
P.S. The draw back is being so far away from anything that resembles civilization. But, honestly, it can be a blessing.
Also, you are close to the Hive villages, the HN, and Hub for trades of all sort.
then once I gather a larger team I move the base with pack animals full of building supplies and work on a much larger base that would never have been possible from roaming bandits or animals over running me - I am in middle of moving my 70 npc army into the edge of the fog lands and building a base there which is much larger much better planned and much more fun
