Will AI swim around walls to get into a base?
So, I setup in the swamp and wanted to use water as a natural shield from enemy raids and such, assuming I have a normal way into the base such as a gate, will the ai use that gate, or will they simply swim around my wall?

they will try and get to the gate, if they cant, they will break your walls instead.

I just had a whole holy nation army go around my wall in the water and killed nearly everyone :( I don't know why since my gate was easily accessible.

I'm not sure how your base is set up, but it sounds like they either went under your wall in the water (which is gonna require some wall destruction and messing around to fix), or you didn't have a wall placed in the water to begin with, which yeah they'll prioritize that as an entrance.

It sucks but it might be better to just move the gate to the side where the water is, and then extend the walls out towards the deeper end of the water. It'll slow down your mobility, but your swimming stats will eventually increase to the point it's no longer an inconvenience. Your enemies, on the other hand, won't live long enough to benefit.

There's water on ALL sides at this point, like on each diagonal to my base, so I have 4 land bridges to the main area. Each one is walled off and one of them has a gate.

yes they will swim around, and will ignore the gate, even if the water is acid. that goes for your character too.
sorry, i was assuming you had walls all the way around.
they would then path to the easiest route

If there is an opening in the wall, they use it. If there is no opening, they go for the gate.

You can use this behavior to your advantage. Place some turrents firing on swimming enemies. Just make sure that you can defend yourself if they reach the land.

Yes, they will swim around your walls if there is a gap. You can exploit this though, with some killing fields, like in other RTS.

Killing fields sure, but scroll down, see the other thread RE: gates and walls for insights/possible solutions to insidious wall gaps...

Each wall section has their own collision, which means between two wall sections, there is a gap an enemy can invade through. Especially the gap between a gate and a wall section is notoriously easy to pass. Do note though: doing this will render this wall unwalkable, so you cannot use turrets. Maybe do this inside a third, normal wall?

There is a slight chance this will remove raids alltogether. I never get raids, but it might be just bc I build in specific locations, or am generally just minding my own business and not agitating factions. IDK.

here is one way to use water to your advantage. a slow motion death trap for anything that tries to attack you.

Actually really like this design. It's similar to what I suggested and seen in the past, but the design utilizes the lake/river inside the walls much more efficiently than what I typically see.

Usually people keep as much of the water outside of the walls as possible, which makes the walls a bit erratic sometimes. And people often make the dead zone entrance area much more narrow and shorter. Yours not only makes the area larger, leaving more room to take out enemies, but it also just looks more visually appealing. Might have to steal this lol Thanks for posting this.
just make sure its deep enough to where one has to swim on both sides of the outer inner wall water trench

How does the water affect your characters entering/leaving -- and how does it affect pack-animals your character's might be leading?
