I'm not sure how your base is set up, but it sounds like they either went under your wall in the water (which is gonna require some wall destruction and messing around to fix), or you didn't have a wall placed in the water to begin with, which yeah they'll prioritize that as an entrance.
It sucks but it might be better to just move the gate to the side where the water is, and then extend the walls out towards the deeper end of the water. It'll slow down your mobility, but your swimming stats will eventually increase to the point it's no longer an inconvenience. Your enemies, on the other hand, won't live long enough to benefit.
they would then path to the easiest route

Usually people keep as much of the water outside of the walls as possible, which makes the walls a bit erratic sometimes. And people often make the dead zone entrance area much more narrow and shorter. Yours not only makes the area larger, leaving more room to take out enemies, but it also just looks more visually appealing. Might have to steal this lol Thanks for posting this.
How does the water affect your characters entering/leaving -- and how does it affect pack-animals your character's might be leading?
