Depends really on the situation. I don't think that a character with 100 martial arts/dodge and STR could win against a character with 100 katana/melee att/def and 100 DEX wielding a ninja blade or wakizashi. Mainly because the blade wielder would have such a high attack speed that the martial artist wouldn't have a change to counter-attack.

But yeah, high level martial artists are generally very powerful(Not as much as before nerf though. Kinda miss those 300 damage punches, lol). The road to become skilled in it however is hard and long.

Lol, even if Martial Arts weren't better than weapons, Martial Arts is the best way to train strength, so it's most efficient to start everyone out as a martial artist to get them going.

For strength training, i kinda like having my guys wander around half-starved. They're on permanent 50% for Strength xp gain.

Martial arts is better than that?

Depends on your definition of better. If I'm not mistaken you can get a much higher strength gain from having heavily burdened characters fight emptyhanded. The tradeoff is that you need some sort of training slave to do it most effectively.

Best way to do it is to find an enemy with fairly equal stats to the one you want to train, knock them out, and then load them up the same as your guy. That way as you train them both their stats will rise together.

Prisoner cages, your own building, and beds make it much easier but aren't required technically.

A max stat MA user would likely beat a max stat weapon user 1v1 far more often than the other way around. The speed and damage are simply too great for it to not.

The downside is group combat. You'll get hit far more often with MA, because the moves leave you too open. Not an issue if you're only fighting one guy, but if he has friends you better have some quality armour.

So I wouldn't say MA is the outright best weapon. As its use is only situational. How often do you find yourself 1v1 vs an enemy that requires the best you can muster? Compared to a group of smallfry that could be more easily taken down with a weapon?

My exp vs a very high end live training dummy ,is that a small fast high end weapon ,is far more effective against a single foe than martial arts.

My stats
str 98
tough 96
dex 94
All master samurai armor.

Melee combat stats
att 88
def 91

Martial arts combat stats
dodge 94
att/arts 89

My foes stats/armour king
att 92
def 102
All specialist heavy samurai armor

Consistantly best results against him were with an edge 3 wakizashi .I hit more,got hit less,and dropped the foe a small bit faster.I also got in more attacks then the foe.

2nd best - Martial arts.i got hit alot,but it varied depending on the moves that my char used.The two "please hit me " moves result in me taking alot more hits than the other 4 moves.i got in more attacks then the foe,but this was a mixed bag due to the "please hit me " moves.

3rd best - Falling Sun.I got hit the most,and missed the most.I got in less attacks then the foe

Those are the only 3 i tested,as those are the 3 this char uses.

This is by the way,with stable version

Major draw for me as a new player is reading about special moves and generally more interesting looking combat. But then there is a mod for that..

its not im doing a martial arts playthrough right now yes DPS is awesome but you have little or no survivability in long engagements you can get one shotted by turrets the dodge mechanic doesnt always work and overall the lack of armor means if you get attacked repeatedly you may well die in fact i would argue for solo play no hirelings ironman the best way to play is crossbows as you can shoot and run and shoot again as long as you can run faster you will win
Tunsafun Oct 31, 2018 @ 11:46am
except for those times you get dodged locked and cant hit anything

Crossbow certainly wins against MA lol

Crossbows are so insanely OP still that they win against virtually anything, though...

The reload should reset everytime you move. Simple fix i think
