What about shield ?
This is the best item we need to attack/defend a city and simply protect your squad from sniper
We could put the shield in the backpack slot, cause you know it's kinda hard to carry a shield and a backpack at the same time.

As the Dev said.
Shields are for whimps.
Or was that losers. Well its one of the two.

So that would make the Dev's response a official no on shields.

I think someone modded it in either on stable or unstable branch can't remember which. But ya not having shields is stupid imo, i mean theres a taunt AND a block only setting....so i think the devs don't code in shields out of sheer hipster irony....

They just dont want them. It was never part of their idea for the game.

Knowing Chris, probably both. I still remember the old description for Spiked Helmets. Good times.

If we assume an ifluence of design from Japanse culture, then shields would be a no.
Although they did have them in earlier periods, they went out of fashion for a number of reasons. They did however, continue to use static screens, which are kind of covered by Kenshi in the form of makeshift and subsquently more substantial walls.

If one looks briefly at the weapons involved currently within the game, how many of those would be used with a shield?

Some of the tooltips/descriptions are still gems.

Paladins could use a longsword and a shield, make it Holy Nation that introduces it. In the scheme of things, people that can fix robots (skeletons) and attach artifical robotic limbs onto humans and have crossbow and simple rifles, you'd think someone at some point might have thought out loud, "I bet we could fashion something out of wood or metal or maybe even metal and wood that could be held in the offhand while still swinging a sword and might actually block crossbolts. "SHIELD WALL"

I'm fine with the devs decisions. I would love a shield too, and "Early access" is for asking for and suggesting things to enhance the game. Several threads exist wanting shields. We can keep asking and Chris may change his mind or someone might mod in a working version one day.

shields with spikes YA + shields can easy be an offensive weapon and were hardly seen as whimpy most shield users required even more training to use them properly. Spear wall would have been a laugh without strong and highly skilled men that had learned how to use them. But if one thinks a Spartan man with a shield was a whimp, sissy boy or weak then well it comes down to a small bit of "you can use your own word here" to say they are for whimps.

Do you know why you don't see lot of shields in mid late 15th century? It's because the tech level was high enough to create plate armour that immune to projectiles and cut so they ditch the sword and shield for a poleaxe which mean more mobility and power. Heck shield almost disappear in the 16th where you only see the buckler for fencing. Same thing can be applied here, tech level was too high thus shield is useless and obsolete. Not saying that shield is useless in every situations because it can be useful for protecting light armoured against projectiles, but technology is what make shield useless not the way around.

The thing is, in the world of Kenshi crossbow are powerfull enought to break any armor. I don't understand how you can protect yourself from this monstrosity without a shield and maybe losing your arm.

for the rish maybe, from what I have read only the richest and more noble of men had plate armor it was rather rare for a majority of any army. The real game changer came with the use of stronger weapons and requirement of grappling requiring use of a free arm and heavy pike formations leaving little room for shields. Heavy armor def played a role.

Also shields evolved with the techknology and while some armies did move to heavier armor other armies would engage with pikemen and then send in 1h and shields to tear through the enemy formation at this point shields became as much offensive as defensive. Making them a perfect fit for the cruel and unforgiving world of Kenshi.

With the weapon set we have in Kenshi I don't think shields would fit at all.

I believe the official reason given for the lack of shields is Kenshi's weird warrior culture. Kinda like Japan used to be.
