how the hell do you get anywhere in this game?
Like am my missing something here? I can't research anything useful, my characters will get murdered by anything with a working brain, and the one guild I spent over an entire ingame week travelling to rejected me and told me to "become an enemy of our enemy" ♥♥♥♥♥ my characters can barely fight a single person and win, let alone become enemies with the major empires that control 1/4th the map. Is there some kind of strat I am missing? Is there a way to at least train skills without joinin a guild?

Sneak if you have to. Watch everything around you.
Play it smart.

Use city guard's to your advantage.
Pick fights near cities. Or scavenge from ones going on.
Pick fights with the losers. They already damaged so more likely to lose to you.

United cities area is actually very good for newbie's as it has some of the best loot. And best places to fight those more powerful after city guard's pumeled them.

Skimmers are great for combat experience after they been beaten up. And less likely to eat you. Or kill you.

I do most of these things, (I usually can't find "losers" to fight though) how do the United Cities benefit me at all?
Go bast, side with UC, fight hn, rebel farmer and cannibal.
I know you will like it, gangbang. 😄

There are ways to lower your relationship with UC to negative 50 and lower, so that you can join the anti slavers, but I think that instead of doing that you should be doing something else altogether for the moment. How about fighting red spiders in the Swamp?
This is a good advise, equip yourself with full set samurai armor, you can beat blood spider with single digits stats. Swamp can train until you mid 30 then you can go to South East area of the map. To further level until 60 ish. Or you can go to bast.

Tips to train, don't kill the spider by removing their tooth, let them wake up and you just stay put after downing those spider because few more additional hits means few more exp. And the spider is weak after you beat it down once.

I see many people do this by removing mechanical spider Eletronic/items to kill it after making it unconscious. I usually let them wake up so I can get few more hit before it went down again.

When you say you can't research anything useful... possibly a silly question, but you know you can buy houses in cities, yes? Do that (a small shack is fine at first, they're normally around 4k cats) and use it as a home base. You can fit a lv1 research bench in there easily, and by the time you want lv2 you should be able to afford a storm house to fit it in.

You can then research some training dummies and use those for initial grinding (or use someone else's as noted by others in the thread). Also, if you're really struggling... get a couple of crossbows. They can be kinda cheesy, but they also allow you to knock things out with minimal danger to yourself, or at the very least get a few shots in so you're fighting a wounded enemy in melee instead of one in perfect health.

And bear in mind that you WILL hit your own guys with the bolts at first, that's important and necessary for them to level their precision shooting so that they will NOT shoot your own guys later on. Seriously, you don't want noobie crossbow users one-shotting your own guys because you gave them an eagle's cross ;p

I suggest new players start in the Hub (with wanderer start). There are some thugs in the bar you can provoke and watch the guards destroy them. Nice gear to start. Grab it and head out.

Travel south to Squin. Squin has everything needed to get started. Low level enemies, a shop that sells bags and research books, some training dummies, nearby copper, and powerful guards.

You can mine copper at the node right outside one of the gates and sell the copper in town. Carrying it in and out will train your strength. Watch the gate for roaming packs of starving bandits. When the guards attack them, join the fight. Maybe add a companion or two.

This is how I've started almost every playthrough. You can get combat stats up to the low to mid 20s in a couple hours. It's a grind but that's how the playthroughs typically start. When you've got some Cats, maybe buy one of the houses in town. Then you can set up for research, and have a place to sleep, store items, and start training other skills (armorsmith/weaponsmith, for example), craft your own bandages, etc.

In addition from the many legitimate/vanilla tips and tricks others have covered, I'm just gonna add something I haven't seen anyone mention yet: mods.

Like you, my first playthroughs (years ago!) felt stressful, grindy and un-fun. So I turned to mods to alleviate my annoyances -- and in the process learned more about the various game mechanics than I did grinding through vanilla (since I was too upset and annoyed to actually pay attention).

Leveling skills take forever? Get a mod that gives 2x, 5x, or even 10x EXP for all actions!
Can't loot all the stuff? Get backpack mods!
Dying of hunger too often? Get mods that let you craft infinite food out of raw meat!
Old computer can't handle the VFX? Get reduced texture and particle effect mods!
Wanderer sucks too much? Get easy start mods with increased (or even maxed) starting stats, gear, and/or cats!
Wanderer doesn't suck enough? How about mods where you have no limbs, no cats, no gear and start in the middle of nowhere?
Training dummies suck? Lol there are training dummy mods to train anything up to 100 (or beyond!)

After several hundred hours playing as a overpoweredubergodsuperherotyrantvillain something and having bludgeoned, sliced, burnt or otherwise disposed of the scum of the earth that are the HN, UC, and SK, I eventually realized that the most fun I had was in the early game when I was much weaker than most other NPCs, and had to rely heavily on planning, stealth or cunning to stay alive. So nowadays I can play the vanilla Wanderer start and actually enjoy it.

TLDR: Try out mods that can alleviate the most frustrating aspects of the game in your playthroughs, at least until you get a solid grasp of game mechanics.

so basically, cheat? not so sure that's a good sentiment to have if your trying to find strats to legitimately get better.

In general, you're going to need to start out "slow."

Out of everything you can see in your viewport, you'll generally be the weakest, least capable at the start of the game... That feeling is going to stay with you for awhile - Kenshi is an unforgiving, harsh, world.

My advice - Start out with the Wanderer start. Go to either The Hub or Squin and mine a bit until you can afford to buy a house there. (It won't take long.) The Shek are not going to be hostile to you and guards will assist/protect you. In "The Hub" it's a bit more dangerous as bands of Dust Bandits can sometimes just come walking through town. (They can do the same in Squin, but the guards will murderize them.)

In "The Border Zone" the only thing you truly need to worry about are Bonedog packs. They'll try to eat you when you're downed. No other enemies that spawn in The Border Zone will try to actually "kill" you. Dust Bandits could dish out enough damage to do that and if you travel around Squin or Admag, you could run into Chosen or other groups that might incidentally kill you with a big hit or three.. BUT, once downed, the only thing that will try to finish the job is a bonedog. (Note: It's possible to aggro Beak Things in Vain if you get too close to them.)

Build up a group in The Border Zone. Check the bars in Squin and The Hub - You're likely to at least find one or two "Unique" companions. Buy additional houses if you need them, especially in The Hub if you started out with a small shack - You'll need a larger building than that to build the second Research Bench. After you build that, you just need to keep "upgrading it." Also - You need a building with an accessible roof to add a wind-turbine for more power when needed when you're basing out of a town.

Fight groups around those towns. Stay away from Dust Bandits until you've got some armor and decent weapons, preferably a couple of crossbow users too. But, you can lure them close to the guards in Squin when things are going badly. In The Hub, you can try luring them close enough to aggro the guards in the Bar, especially if the DB's try to attack a local that gets involved. (Though, this can result in a big furball of a fight...) The Bar guards don't capture/imprison downed enemies other then dumping them outside the bar if they're downed inside it.

Save up your cash and join the Shinobi through their chapter in The Hub or Admag. (10k cats) It's totally worth it and you'll have access to some training items, free beds in any town they're located, some protection and best of all - A fence that sells cheap, but often excellent, gear.

Joining factions other than the Shinobi - Take care, there, and learn a bit about them first:

Also - The wiki is a great source of info.

Did you even read my post, or at least the TLDR? There are already plenty of people giving you "legit" strats; I'm just sharing another possible avenue that actually helped me to understand, and eventually enjoy this game.

Your original post made it clear that you are frustrated by the game. My suggestion, therefore, was to identify what exactly it is that you find frustrating, and use mods to alleviate some of that frustration. For example, making money (to buy food and bandages) used to be a big problem for me, especially in the early game, so I used a mod that gave me 1 million cats at start. That alleviated the pressure of keeping my toons alive enough for me to figure out some decent early-game moneymaking tricks, and eventually profitable trading/smuggling routes. Eventually I became good enough to not need that modded start anymore.

I dunno about you, but for me games are first and foremost for entertainment/enjoyment. I already get enough frustration from work and life in general. So if a game starts frustrating me, then I will find a way to make it enjoyable, or move on to a different game.

You can call that "cheating" if you want, but if it is then so is looking up strats online.
Make all of ur characters greenlander males and start in the holy nation, as close to a town as you can. Be sure to buy a few copies of the holy flame from a barkeep and every few days a priest will come out to pray with you. DO NOT MISS IT. As long as u keep the HN neutral or allied with you the worst thing you have to worry about in that area is starving bandits.

If dust bandits or ninjas take ur base just wait nearby and when the priest shows up for prayer day with a fully armed guard of high lvl paladins let them handle the hostiles in your base.

Also sometimes rando ppl in the HN will give you medkits or food. Random paladin patrols will heal you if you get knocked out. Just know that if you ever try to bring anything other than a greenlander male and ur not at least allied with the HN its going to be an ordeal.

looking up strats is not at all cheating in comparison to giving yourself millions of cats and I am honestly baffled you think so. Strats are different ways players can get better at the game and just because you didn't invent it doesn't make it cheating at all. They are basically just a way of doing things ingame that can help you succeed. Saying that is cheating while you basically give yourself items without any kind of work done to get them quite frankly the most retarded thing I have heard.
cdplayer906 Feb 17, 2021 @ 2:06pm
being new, this is just kinda what the game is. you'll eventually miss it when you're on your 20 somethingth playthrough and nothing is unknown and almost all of your decisions are calculated based on previous knowledge.
Oubley Feb 17, 2021 @ 3:24pm
I try to have at least 3 peeps as soon as possible. Use at least one as a medic and set in passive who doesn't fight. Their job is to save my favorite character in the squad.

In a pinch they can also go run and grab some mercs, so having at least 2k of cat on hand is handy.

Getting athletics skill for characters to 20 is a priority for me. I find most, but not all, things can typically be outrun with at least 20. Second important thing probably getting strength up to around 20, then can carry people and still run fairly fast.

I try to remind myself that getting taking prisoner isn't the end of the world, not yet anyways.

My bane always seems to be blasted darn spiders.

Remember it's not retreating or being cowardly, I like to say it's redeploying.

Some armor early on will not cover arms and legs completely, sometimes just the chest, so might be stronger then hungry bandits even but if have armor that only covers chest, then that like 6 other things that the bandits can wallup with their sticks.

In terms of training, in terms of attack increase, I like to have enemies chase me to town gates or store fronts. Sometimes I'll hire mercs. I'll also "borrow" peoples training dummies. The training stuff needs to be of at least the "train to 15" variety to be useful in my opinion even then I'll typically only bother to increase a recruits stats to 12 or so because the "slowness" kicks in.

edit: Early on when I died I liked to "replay" with a revenge story, or pretend it was my dad and had heard stories, thus when my new character visited a place thats was an old place to me, in my head I tricked myself that it's sort of new.

Okies. MeteorJunk and Silentprotagonistsays, you two can stop now.
After this I will just delete post's and hand out official warnings.

So play nice so I don't have to do my moderation duties. Or type out both your names out by hand in my cellphone again. Because seriously, it's a pain in the you know what.

Someone pointed out that spiders are not good for new players. Well in that case, how about fighting some bulls in Holy Nation and Shek territories ? My point is, whatever you do, don't go lowering your relation with UC and joining anti-slavers the first chance you've got. There is no hurry in doing something like that, you have as much time as your squad needs to get there eventually.
DROPbear Feb 17, 2021 @ 6:46pm
like most people mention dont go joining any faction until you have a well establish base, cos it limits your trading options.

some general advice:

1. THE most important rule in the game at least for the early game: make fat stacks of CATS

2. Hub/ squin/stack are excellent starting & leveling locations and great place to farm for money

3. explore around (2) and explain your squad size (preferable up to 12, with 6 of them decent fighters)

4. repeat as per Rule 1, 2, 3 the game starting is grindy until you are decently equiped with at least 6 fighters with 40ish combat stats. You need them when fighting those beak things.

5. start your drug trafficking operation. Best routes are swamps towns (Shark) to flat lagoons / mourn for fat stacks of cash.

6. expand your drug trafficking operation, by buying building in towns and make your starting base for research.

7. take your time to explore nearby ruins for ancient research books. and at the same time earn fat stacks of cash.

8. once you have 2 squads, and managed to research the basic items, with fat stacks of cash. you may consider building a base. i will not be covering this since their are plenty of tutorials on the web for this.

9. Some helpful tips, for Hub/squin/stack location. If your guys lost some limbs, you can get easy and cheap replacements at the hiver villages at nearby vain. alternatively most techhunter waystation have them too.

10. ditch your backpack during fights. Equipment especially backpacks and gear decrease your combat effectiveness & some decrease exp gain. So understand your gear.

11. In case you didnt know, being a slave is considered a good outcome. A good place to level up your stats, especially toughness. You dont have to worry about food, and health since the guards will take good care of you.

12. expand your squads. to find recruits, go to town bars (limited). alternatively, travel around and along the roads some of this randomly spawn drifters can be recruited. This recruits are slightly better stats with about 20ish stats but cost about 7k to 9k cats.
