I got the best results by placing walls very meticulously and mainly in long sections, using short sections only for sharp curves. Even then, there were always some ramp nodes that just wouldn't work.
The game is pretty smart when it comes to figuring out pathfinding, you can do some pretty incredible things using that tool once you get used to it. You can also access some extra buildings and stuff you never could access in vanilla, such as this:

Seriously, eat your heart out Flats Lagoon, you squandered such a cool platform with your crappy bars and wasteful defence. Buh!
Placing buildings with the IGE is kind of cheating as you won't need to expend materials to make it, so if you're concerned about that then simply build your building anywhere "naturally and organically" using materials and time + Engineering investment, and then adjust it manually later. Your guys will figure out how to use it - but make sure you save and reload first, as the game doesn't update the terrain on the fly after moving stuff.
Basically just open the IGE and click your ramp, and then use the appropriate arrows to position it into the terrain. You can straighten it up all nice later, along with fixing your walls so they don't look like broken teeth as well.
I didn't enjoy base building until I found out about this tool, infinitely grateful that the developers left it in the game.
I just had go at using that tool for the purpose of aligning my farms. I use Better crop Fences, but still it triggers my OCD when they don't line up perfectly.
I fired up the tool and made minor adjustments to two farms, but something odd happened- for whatever reason this influenced fog levels around my base. As soon as I exited the tool, a heavy layer of fog swept over my base and I couldn't see jack crap when zoomed in.
I thought maybe this was a weather pattern I had not seen before so I sped up the game but it still lingered. Tried restarting the game and it was still there. Apparently, I needed to go into Terrain features and reset fog layers.
No idea how that happened as I was very clinical with the adjustment process. So to anyone else using this tool, make sure you make a backup save, as it seems very easy to mess things up.
