And since I got my double harpoons + mkII crossbows set up haven't had a gate breach before the attackers get gunned down.
1. Open the menu with shift+f12. Then go to town placement.
Select your town, I think it might always be called "Your Outpost". Move the center of your town (the statue figure), outside your walls, still making sure that all your buildings etc are within the town radius, wihch should be visible around the statue.
This way, events will trigger outside your walls, and they won't get stuck or try and circumvent your walls.
2. Open the same menu.
Open the road menu, and make the roads visible. If there are roads going through your base, this means that if you open the gates, roaming squads will try and get in, and might just roam around your base etc.
Move the roads outside of your base, and this should help with all kinds of intruders.
Also, if you have engineers at the ready, they will try and repair the gates when they are being attacked, whilst maybe your turreteers will try and shoot the invaders.
Personally, I don't have gates right now, I just have a long funnel that enemies must walk through to get it, and turrets on the ground level shooting at them if needed.
They don't funnel anything becuase enemies walk through them and spawn inside of them. Again, I'm not getting raided, (although back to back raids are also a massive pain in the ass) I'm having lone enemies like chosen and berserkers phase through my walls when I'm out exploring and kill my farmers and miners.
I finally got all the jobs and whatnot figured out to the point that my base should be self-suficient, but instead it produces nothing becuase all my laborers keep getting randomly dismembered by wandering mobs before I can do anything about it.
I tried regenerating the navmesh, but it didn't seem to do much, enemies still teleport in with annoying regularity. I also took Aurane's advice and checked out the position of the outpost marker statue, but it was smack dab in the middle of my base so I don't think that has anything to do with it.
I think I'm just going to move my base to the border zone. My laborers can handle a few starving bandits slipping through the cracks.
I once had a base over at the shrieking forest (I went there, it looked like a nice place, didn't notice any shriekers until I had actually travelled there with my whole group. I guess that's how the north of europe was colonized, people came here during the summer and figured it was lovely place, until winter set in lol), and they kept getting through my walls because my walls were spanning a massive area.
What type of walls do you have? In my bases in the newest builds I've tried the makeshift wall, and the first defensive walls. I had a problem with the enemy attacking my gate, and then destroying a part of the wall next to the gate, and then getting in that way. This is why I changed to the funnel solution.
In the first defensive gate solution, I had a lot of my guys being engineers, so when someone began bashing the walls down, a lot of my guys would run to the gate to fix it, and it would slow the enemy down almost to a halt. With the turrets I was able to keep them out. But this wasn't optimal I agree, since once they got in, depending on the base size, it didn't matter whether I had the walls or not.
Here's a particularly egregious example. Trader column marching straight through a wall.

Where should I send my save for the bug report?
1) Have one gate
2) Channel your walls inward at that gate point to look like \_/
3) Set up revolving harpoon guns along the walls on the sides
4) Keep your gate locked unless you need to get out
5) Wait for things to angrily show up, then mow them down as they try to get in
6) collect loot
Gates and walls are crucial. Gates are more effective against animals in keeping them out of your city/town. Otherwise, they're just a temporary barrier that should hold up long enough for 4-6 rotating turrets to obliterate anything coming through.
My research bench is level4. But there is no technology for walls upgrade.
