Does the slave start work properly?
As soon as I start, I'm branded as an escaped slave even if I go to a cage straight away. Then a guard took off my shirt and said something about trying to escape. I don't understand what's going on. It doesn't seem like it's supposed to work this way, but I'm not sure.

no i did that. i was still an "escaped slave". A guard even came over, said something about me trying to escape (which I didn't do), and then took off my shirt for some reason.

You need to be in 'obedient slave' job. This should happen automatically if you don't do anything to countermand it. Check the job queue on bottom right to make sure, and have 'jobs' selected.

I chose slave start for my latest run and it was actually very fun (albeit slightly glitchy in a Kenshi kinda way).

Then get in a cage as Hatsune said, it should reset it? If not, then get beaten up and dragged back to your cage, which then 100% will reset it.

Getting beaten up and dragged back to your cage is something you should get used to fairly quickly anyway. ;)

To briefly expand on this:

A guard will eventually come to fetch you for work duty. If for now you are just in a cage, then wait a while. When on work duty you will auto-run to different work locations and mine stuff. A good slave just watches the screen until nightfall - when the fun starts.

getting in the cage didn't reset it, and getting beaten just to make it work doesn't sound like a good plan. i've seen people on youtube die after one or two beatings.

I tried the slave start a couple of times. Sometimes I get a beating or two for being an escaped slave, other times it works fine (auto running like a good slave). I use mods though so not sure if that has anything to do with it.

If you get beaten to death, just restart and try again :) Hopefully it works better for you the next time around.

just get beat up and they'll put you in a cage and heal you, your toughness stat will also increase.

They should patch you up (although sometimes ... they don't, I admit).

There are probably myriad ways to play that start, I am just letting you know how I did it. You could just try running out of the gate while you're not yet starved and weakened. I was locked up for two weeks and beaten senseless many times. Haha!

[edit] You will still need to lockpick your shackles though

"myriad ways" let's be honest, the only real way is to ignore the whole slave thing and run out the front gate straight away because this slave camp has security like a canadian prison

But then you may as well not choose slave start. I think it's an RP thing. I enjoyed formulating my plan and training the necessary skills, etc. Really you should start already starved so running out of the gate isn't an option, because believe me, after a few days in Rebirth that isn't an option. ;)

Yeah that's kinda my point, I don't think it's working as intended.
The slave start is good fun if you play around with it.

There is nothing 'intended' other than you being in the slave pit. The guards first response is kind of like them checking you in.

Pick your locks at night and everyone elses for lock picking.

Carry shackles when forced to work for strength training. Pick your shackles while on a pole and put them in your inv. The nice guard will come and bring you another one.

Knock guys out on the poles all night for assassin training.

Steal from the sleeping guards and when they wake up jump in the cage to train stealing. Put your shackles on the guards for good times.

Free someone and then practice kung fu on him while the guards are napping. Take all the guards swords and turn it into a giant kung fu pit.

Strength goes up quickly from all the fun.

So on, lots of adventures there.

You can just walk out the front door in the middle of the day with near ninja stats after some training and stealing.

I love this guy's write up! For the google searches... I find the "Obedient Slave" task has a lot to do with your shackles. Specifically... LOCKED shackles.

If you unlock your shackles but leave them on, your character might not labor and just sit in the cage even with the task on. You will auto get the job when shackles are back on
