+ Make sure that you Know the Tech of what you exactly need.
After that, you'll be able to create 3 types of specific weapon class.
There are 3 levels of bench, the lower levels have a cap on the quality level of the weapon they can produce (although it can be exceeded by 1 level through critical success by smith).
The 2nd and 3rd tier benches require more resources to build and have higher grade input resources like steel instead of iron plate.
Once researched one shoud be able to build the new crafting benches directly from build tab, once selected there is the option to cycle through available versions on the left hand side using small arrows. Or upgrade an existing bench lower left of main gui two buttons together dismantle and upgrade.
In the crafting menu one will see 3 levels listed for each weapon, assuming that one has done enough research and got a 3rd tier bench. These are the limits of the previous bench and the current highest available to your character, before modified by their skill.
One can still produce any level weapon retrospectively on higher tier benches but they always consume the materials of that bench type.
Weapons need blueprints and generic category research to unlock the different types but this is independent of their quality.
Situational modifiers like injury/hunger/darkness will lower smithskill. Only the skill at completion of the weapon is taken into account when determining its quality. So a level 90 can do 99% work and have a level 0 or ~45 (injury) character complete it or vice versa.
Thank you I didn't realize you could upgrade the bench
If you do that, you will not be able to build another level 1 bench, and will be forced to make weapons that require fabric as well as iron plates. Level2 weaponsmithing requires fabric, then level 3 or 4 requires steel bars.
If you leave your level one weaponsmith bench, you can continue to train your weaponsmith all the way up using minimal resources on a level 1 bench. Certainly also build the other higher level benches to produce weapons if you want/need them, but don't train on them, as they require more resources.
So I would not touch any other benches until you get 90 because you will be using bars and cotton gins to grind which will get very expensive.
You don't need a cotton field unless you are grinding but once you get to the skill level you want you can just buy fabric which is very cheap, and especially the shop in the area that grows it.
Why can't you just make another level 1 bench? chose it form build menu using side scrolls.
Someone doesn't check the GUI when using Build Mode. Don't listen to this, current players. This person is not observant. Also, it's seriously not worth being stingy in Kenshi. You won't have the time in most circumstances to be stingy. Unless you're using mods to significantly lower various difficulty mechanics, just do whatever feels right at the time.
Spend ancient science book to research "weapon grade"
Spend ancient science book to research "weapon bench"
The quality level is determined by three things.
1. The skill of the smith
2. The levels available to a specific bench to craft
3. Which levels you've researched
If you've researched "Basic weapons grades", that means you've unlocked the ability to craft up to "Catun No. 1" quality, though the level 1 weapon smith building can only craft up to "Refitted Bade", the level just below Catun 1.
So now you can craft anything up to Refitted Blade, but you're still limited by the skill of your character that is smithing. Until they reach level 10, they can only craft Rusted Junk quality weapons. From 10-19 they can craft Rusting Blade, from 20-24 Old Refitted Blade, and 25-29 Refitted Blade. At 30 they would normally start being able to craft Catun 1, but as mentioned before the bench doesn't support it, so without upgrading it you would be locked at Refitted Blade for the time being, no matter how high your skill level got.
There is also a critical success system, where depending on your skill level relative to product you were crafting, you have a chance to crit the quality level for one higher than you intended. Even if the next level is normally uncraftable to you currently. So if you crit while making a Refitted Blade, you'd craft a Catun 1, even though it cannot normally be made ont eh bench you were using.
You can research higher tier weapon grades with new tech levels. Highest is Edge 1, which may result in Edge 2 on critical success, but both of these two are weaker in cut damage than their non-craftable counterparts. You can´t craft edge 3 or me-two weapons...
