and a back to menu option most likely will not happen until thee Devs can get the game to fully unload the data when doing so. as right now if you start a new game within the game you can find your bought building and any outposts you made teleported into the new game.
I've only just started playing a few days ago and haven't used any mods.
The game exits, even in your example. It just doesn't dump itself out of memory and "hangs there." ie: Hang The only way to get it to release is to stop the process, which effectively dumps everything.
It's annoying, but not game-breakingly so.
