your not skilled enough.
it's literally skill levels that let you break out of it or dodge it.
sicne your not skilled enough, 1 bonedog will massacre you.
and wait until you fight a goat. you thought bonedogs were bad.
I have witnessed my own Doggo (Elder, with over 70 Dex now, I've had him since about as early as you can get doggo without using Guy and Dog start) that can rip through entire reaver bands.
The suggestion using crossbows is a good method.
Well that just doesn't feel right at all. They're so common, yet they can kill entire bands of people. I get the game is supposed to be difficult and unfair sometimes, but there comes a point where it's just not fun to have so much progress wiped out by one angry doggo
the wolf might still have killed your whole squad if they were rookie fighters, but at least 5 guys whacking at the wolf at the same time would have a better chance than feeding him single rookies one by one
