Farming While In Town
Just started playing a couple days ago, and can't put this masterpiece down. Good lord what an awesome game.

I bought a house in Squin, and want to start a cactus rum operation. How viable is it to place the farm land outside of the city borders and keep it operational? I've read about the moment you make your own "base" you start getting raided... what constitutes a base? Will the farm get wiped out while I'm sitting in my house in town? Or am I thinking about this all wrong?

It's very viable to do so. Your farmers can withdraw to town and the raiders will come, walk around the crop fields, get bored and leave because farms are no good for them.

the instant it creates a outpost is considered creating a base.

Ok great, thanks for the replies! A follow up question would be: if I plop a farm and that triggers the creation of an outpost, how many outposts can I have? Can I delete an outpost once it's made?

One outpost at a time max. To delete an outpost just remove everything there (houses, wells, farm plots, stone mines ect). :)

I haven't played in a few months, so I don't remember if this is something you have to change in the settings or not - I don't think so - but you can definitely have multiple outposts. I've had two large bases plus a few small one-shack outposts before. Whether it's a good idea to spread your guys out too much is a different story, but it's definitely possible.

outposts are not limited, i once had 6 or 7 at a time.
you will run into the following issues if you do:
-raids can target only one and may get confused.
-you will maybe crash depending on your memory as if you have 6 outposts with people in them, the game keeps in memory the areas. with a non potato this is ok, 3 should run.

just try to inhabit an outpost at a time, 2 or 3 temporarily is allright.

If you can do research hydroponic, you can place many fields inside your bought house. Only problem is the grain grinder cannot be constructed in town (for wheat field harvesting).

Hydroponic fields has many advs, each field needs only one person to harvest and only 2 mouse-click to harvest 36 wheatstraw (total 0% losses), spent only 3 bucks of water to grow up. I think you can take consider about it. Have fun.

Thanks for the replies! I think today I'm going to create a small cactus farm outside town, with an iron ore processor since it doesn't fit inside my house. I'm a bit worried about "tax collectors", but I do make quite a bit of money at this stage and might be worth it for a hobby cactus farm :D
