Can't use building materials

When I try to use my building materials in my inventory to build it says I don't have building materials even though I have them in inventory, and yes I am using the character with the building materials to build. Is there a way to fix this?

make sure its the correct building materials.
as it will say you do not have the the building materials even if it requires copper or steel.
