Is the north east desert a bad place to start?
Hello. Currently playing my first game, pre-base.

I started with the default character in the Hub, and immediately went up north east to the desert (to the very edge). I did this simply because I felt familiar with it after seeing a youtuber start there.

However, I'm having a little trouble. It seems that everywhere I go (especially if I try to leave the desert) I get completely smashed, even with a 15-20 strong party. I got almost smashed by Cannibals to the west. I got completely smashed by the Holy Nation for having bug creatures. I got completely smashed by the Bloodreavers to the south. Completely smashed by those terrible giraffe-looking things. Etc.

Was it really dumb to immediately go to the north east desert like that? Was I supposed to stay around the Hub?

Can you recommend some areas that are less smash-dense for a newbie?
holy nation area. except they dont like your pet so. UC areas are best after that. so stay put and build up your team.

I started off in the the border area but heres a good tip i heard from reddit:

If you are too weak for an area. hang out by a town and kite mobs to the guards, then help them fight it. Its a good way to slowly raise stats safely. while also you can make money off the loot and find gear upgrades if you don't go the crafting route.

Also, if you have a high enough reputation the faction will sometimes help medic you or even give you bodyguards. The UC gave me like 10 people once for like 5 days just cause I was in a city and had a high rep. was super helpful for ruin raiding.

The Hub is a good area to start your training in, dust bandits will happily smash you but won't eat or imprison you after. Just dont get rolled in one of their camps or they won't let you up again.

The desert is a bit harder than the Hub area, but not impossible, the only thing you really have to pay attention to are Skimmers (that are thou very slow) and possible Noble Hunters wanting to practice their crossbow on your head, but this doesn't happen so often and it's usually well advertised by Samurais shouting stuff like "MAKE WAY TO THE HONORABLE NOBLE!"

Getting smashed is good. Keep getting smashed until you don't get smashed any more.

when i did a trader start super easy i know you start with a pack bull and some money and a backpack lol. i headed north to the 3 desert cities and even though skimmers were a major threat i managed to just follow samuri squads around for safety until i could reach the hub which is where i knew after watching lets plays. so its funny you started in the hub and wanted to go into the desert ha. the exact opposite of what i did.

i just picked up dead bodies and looted all the enemies the samuri's killed gaining strength and tried to help them out if i could. be careful not to let them see you stealing their gear ha.

and i would follow friendly group to friendly group until reached my destination. you could also hire some mercs to bodyguard you until you reach your destination.

you could try to save up some money and buy better recruits that might start out with 20 in stats for example. griffin is in holy nation territory. i believe wukong is in mongrel. one of the shecks in squinn has some good stats kang the giant maybe. i don't know too many more but those i believe has some good starter stats.

make sure you train up your melee attack maybe from training dummie in shinobi thieves hideout or a police station. or maybe your gear is penalizing you too much. and make sure you do not fight with backpacks on unless its thieves.

The Great Desert area is a fine starting area.

Pro:
- 5 cities and several slaver camps to get recruits and sell stuff.
- Skimmers won't eat you and bonedogs will usually only take an arm or a leg.
- Wandering slavers and manhunters carry medkits and will heal people who are downed before leading them to safety.
- Bandits usually only want food and are fairly weak.
- Dust storms can be completely negated with a single piece of equipment.
- Can often find locations with stone, copper, water, and iron in the desert.
- Accept a wider variety of races (still hate skeleton).

Con:
- Continuous howling wind (need to lower ambient sound).
- Needing to pay rent to UC every week.
- Arid farming and hemp is illegal.
- Since Manhunters and most other groups aren't immediately hostile, they can wander into you base then suddenly decide to attack one of your workers (keep your gate closed).
- If non-human, your recruitment options will be limited since you can't head into Holy Nation without being attacked, and most the areas to the southeast are death till geared and experienced.
- You'll have to make nice nice with slavers unless you want to be an enemy of UC, Slavers, and Merchant Guild.

Hi, you did right. Get out of Hub once you get enough cats to buy your way into the Shinobi thiefs. You can hire someone to stay behind to mine for you. Go to Stoat, it's centrally located with lots of buildings to choose from for purchase. Set up your research there.
Hub is a poor man's trap, little money to be had by looting vagrats. In Stoat, they have a good bow & clothes makers. Heft top rated armorer, Heng has the 2nd best weapon maker. Scraphouse by Black Desert City has the best weapons at very steep prices. Sho-Battai has backpacks. Drin has HN weapons to loot for cats. Hunt skimmers with your crew & gate guards to pick up skills in bow & melee. Go to Tengu Vault for skimmers for night hunting. Load up your backpack & pickup a dead skimmer for strength training. The desert allows for good visibilty to avoid trouble or to see opportunities. When you feel your ready, (fast runner) go to Mongrel & hunt heads for more money. Mongrel has the best boot maker & bows. Hire guys then leave them in key towns to buy, mine & loot for you, especially at Black Desert City. Hire a skeleton to remain behind to iron mine & buy for you. You must bring your own building mat's, food & bolts because
they don't sell these. I can't speak for the last portion of the map, but this is what works for me. Good luck. PS. Lock yourself into a slavers cage in a UC city for lock picking skills when no one is around, get to 50 plus, then your ready to pillage ruins, labs, etc.
