Now, I do have an interesting alternative: an AI Package added to your default squad that sends characters to Protect Allies or Find and Rescue them if downed.
If you want to be my guinea pig, I can upload it to the workshop and you can get it.
Edit: It is worth noting that this will work only with the default Game Starts. If you have any mods for this, you will have to add the AI Package named 'Protect and Rescue' to that Squad Template via FCS.

Of course this is cheating. You should feel appropriately guilty if you go this route. :) The intent of the game is to make you stare at it for hours and hours and monitor every possible thing that could go wrong.
