Attacking?

I just started out and picked a fight with some random bum in town, but when I right click on him and select attack, my character does nothing, just stands there and gets pounded on. How does combat even work in this game?

You automatically fight but starting out you're absolute hobo trash, best way to train is to hang around town and assist the guards in beating up dummies who attack the town.

The issue isn't that I suck, it's just that my character literally doesn't swing when I click the attack option. Nothing at all happens.

No, I unchecked everything, hold, jobs, etc.

With your stats those guys are just too good and are gonna kill you. You're too slow to get a hit in so your character will be stun locked continually. You really need to get out and find some weak enemies to fight.

So the issue is he's not swinging. You need to improve your dexterity and attack stat, most likely you're getting attacked so fast that your character isn't able to actually find the time to swing as he's too busy defending off blows.

lol, yeah, I'm retarded. I went outside the town and ran into some sort of stick swinging cancer patient that I was finally able to kill. The issue is just that I attack about once every 20 seconds or so.

Do I need to be using specific weapons to train different stats, or just grind with anything?

first thing you can do is find a training dummy to get ur melee attack up to 15 if you find a dummy lvl 3. Weapon lvl their weapon specific skill (katana,heavy weapon, blunt, sabre etc..) which affect dmg with this weapon. Melee attack is your chance to hit, defense to block. All weapon raise those 2. Dex govern the rate of attack and is leveled easier with light weapons, also boost cutting dmg. Strength is for blunt damage and attack speed of heavy weapon

You really want a light blade, Wakizashi, Ninja blade or Katana. The lighter it is the faster you'll swing. Try and find Starving bandits to fight, they're weak and use blunt weapons so there's less chance of you bleeding to death.

yea
you are to low level to be able to get a hit in. you are experiencing stun lock.
though if they knock you out. and you get back up and fight again with out healing, then you will level up faster. but then again, it could kill you.

as others suggested, look for weaker enemies. like hungry bandits. or get enslaved, they will work you and you will get some ex in doing so in several skills.

Make sure the weapon in hand is not very heavy, they al lhave a weight on them and it looked like you had a Jitte in hand and those are slower weapons until you have the str to wield them
