The chinese most certainly did use crossbows. They might have been the first people on the planet to use them.
Because the dev didn't want bows.

Also not based on the "Asian" culture. Sure they use Japanese words and weapons for certain factions. But it's their own game and setting. The empire AKA United cities is nothing like how Japan actually operated at all. The UC is run by a cabal of nobles where wealth is power. With its armies being no better than glorified mercenaries. The "samurai armour" is nothing like actual Japanese armour either.

Crossbows while complicated to make are easy to use. Plus in kenshi they all seem to have an aversion to using wood so everything is made of of iron and steel. Which you can see by looking at the game. A steel bow would be extremely hard to use. Though technically possible.

Let's not forget that the people living in the world on kenshi are the remnants of an older civilisation. With many technologies still remembered or rediscovered. That includes crossbows. There seems to be some incident which blasted everyone back to the Stone Age essentially. So they could have quite easily found these ancient crossbows and come up with their own designs.

I think bows wouldn't really fit the style of the game, crossbows seem much more natural in the universe that Kenshi is set in.

Also why even use a bow if you could use a crossbow?

There are actually 'old world crossbows' in the game, so I feel like this is exactly how crossbow use came to be popularized. That plus how much heavy armor is available to wealthy factions.

Bow have faster rate of fire. A powerful war bow is vastly outclass any crossbow beside siege crossbow and modern crossbow. They can totally make a compound bow because they already have a compound bow on top of a stick to make a crossbow.

At the end of the day it's up to the dev because they more or less want a mele focus game. A Bow would be too powerful while a crossbow which have a much slower rate of fire will make mele still viable.

The answer is all about time and simplicity when thinking of resource management. They already had some of the foundational work for crossbows in the form of the various turrets, all they needed was to miniaturize most of it, add some grips and triggers, and polish the look. Granted i'm sure it was more complicated than this, but adding bows and bow animations might have taken a bit more time in comparison?

For now it's a great point to be at, they fit the theme of the game and people get to play around with some ranged specced characters.

Where is this fact? I missed it? Where is the dev saying this is based on Japanese culture? This is based on the devs dream fantasy land not earth, not japan etc. He said more then once this is his dream world, he has wanted to create this game world for well over 10 years, and thought out long ago, no bows, no guns ever in it. Just he has big fat disclaimers floating around he retains all rights to veto anything, and keep his artistic intregrity for the game intact.

Guy has a vission for this game and its loosly at best got some asian influances, but rest assured minus cool sword fights and some katanas that is it. We don't bow to each other, there is no sepiku or how ever you spell it if you get beat in battle and live. Heck no culture wise its very much not asian as this game your suppose to get defeated a lot and come back while most cultures in asia you get defeated that much your suppose to hang your head in shame, and have it haunt your family name for generations. In this no one cares if you got beate 70 times by dust bandits. Just like they don't care that you can now kill 30 at a time.

I mean the closest to an honor system I seen in game is Holy Nation's religous zeal and hatred for women and non humans. Maybe shek they more klingon like then asian though... Keep in mind he flat said no to bows, and guns that is final as far as I heard. Crossbows were somethign that was in the maybe pile for a long long time. As in he thought it was acceptable he just thought a lot of issues woudl arise from use of them. To him it was the lessor evil in his sowrd fighting fantasy game.

Not base on but clearly inspired by Japan history and culture. The UC for example have many parallel characteristics with Japanese's Zaibatsu, trading company which held great influence over the goverment and military. They also have almost all weapons which were use by ancient Japanese. Some figthing stands and attacks are obviously inspired by Japanese Kenjutsu..I mean we even have Ninjas, Shinobi(same thing) with real historical ranks. :D
