Then get yourself in a fight with a group that will heal you after to make sure you don't just die when you lose. Slavers or Holy Nation for example, except you may not want to tank your relations with Holy Nation right away (can still later recover them if you do by finding a HN pacifier). Just getting your backside kicked will train your stats pretty nicely. You will be healed and enslaved, but that's not terrible in this game either. Since you got your thievery up first, you can pick yourself free and sneak or just make a run for it after recovering. Even just playing along until healed will probably train some other useful stats like labour.
Once free, a full size group of hungry bandits shouldn't be too hard to take on. I do also recommend getting yourself (or small squad) at least a decent weapon equipped by looting NPC fights at the tail end. One of the better places I have seen to do this safely is at the border between UC and Holy Nation territory in the north. Wait for a Samurai patrol to encounter a Paladin patrol, sit back, and watch the carnage. Once safe to loot out of sight (use sneak again to make sure), you can easily get stocked on paladin's crosses, wakizashis, and even sometimes katanas with a few low quality ones to spare that can be sold for a tidy profit elsewhere.
and make sure they are at least Basically trained for combat.
ie. 30's across the board, str, dex, toughness, attack, defense... if they dont at LEAST have that, you dont stand a chance in hell.
honostly if your guys are weak... you shouldnt be looking for large battles, you should be looking for small groups of 2 or 3 guys... or kicking some hungry bandits down and throwing them in cages so that you can train your guys with a personal fighting slave.
I still prefer to rush up, cut, and fade back using a single character, let them string out a bit in pursuit, and turn in and cut again before bolting off. As their wounds slow them down, I will eventually stand and finish them. These days I do it mostly to challenge myself to win a fight with 1 vs 20 fight without taking a single hit.
No shame in that, the only shame is in quitting.
Good luck, and if you need help, feel free to ask.
I dislike that method for several reasons. They don't ALWAYS spread out among the enemies, and still tend to bunch up enough to take AOE damage they won't block. They also can get too spread out among several enemy squads (Depends on spawns) and if not managed carefully, can be cut down quickly. They also can race off for that ONE GUY way off in the distance, splitting your forces.
I MANUALLY assign targets to ensure good cross coverage and mutual support, but maintain spacing (Using Shift Click as needed) to prevent AOE damage and bunching up on the same target. (Try to never have more than 2 on any one target at a time in the current build. If there's just 1, put everyone else Passive and on standby at a safe but close range. (To switch out injured party members as needed and maintain pressure on the enemy.)
if you can handle plank, then use plank or ever fragmented axe, but this require really high stats.
due to some intentional or faulty design, melee weapons like swords have AOE attack, that absolutely sompletely impossible from any kind of perspective but still, your weapons have AOE attack and can "penetrate" large amount of targets without loss of power or momentum.
Also everyone suffer from terminate stage of stormtrooper syndrom and attack one at time.
As result, you send one unit and that unit deal absurd amount of damage by AOE attacks that normally not blocked and completely ignored by everyone expect main target.
This technique can be used with conjuction of small delay and kiting, as result, half of enemy squad will be busy healing each other, and only some will actually fight.
this allows to beat superior forces, if you attack all at once, make sure to leave some space to prevent your units from taking AOE damage.
I prefer Katana and back them up with Naginata. Heavy Weapons are a bad choice for low level characters. Do not recommend their use.
I strongly dislike the "JUST USE HEAVY" It's bad advice. Heavy Armor and Weapons are a death sentance to a new character and especially one in the hands of a new player.
The "Noob Friendly" weapons (Which give a hidden bonus to skill and damage for low skill characters, which decreases over time as skill with the class improves) are the Wakazashi and the Longsword.
I personally prefer to use those three weapons mostly. Katana or Wakazashi is primary. Naginata secondary (Best of polearm class) and Longsword for training in Saber Class, though I dislike most of the sabers. (I do like the Desert Saber) I have some Paladin Cross as well, but they're mostly disused.
Heavy Weapons are only for stronger and more DEX skilled characters, and on mine, I don't favor them.
Leather Armor or at the very least, a Chest Protector are good starting armor. Eventually go up to Plate Jackets (For light armor) and Samurai Armor for Heavy, but feel free to take your time and see how the game works. Also keep in mind that you don't fight every enemy the same way, be mindful of the fight. If they're stronger than you stat wise, consider avoiding that particular fight, if that's not possible, have someone BLOCK, and while they're being attacked, manuver another character around to hit their attacker from behind.
At first, you will have little to no advantage over any enemy, but as you grow stronger, you will start to gain them.
RAWCODE.
The game was changed. It used to be up to 3 could attack at once, but this was viewed as overly powerful, so it was reduced to 1 at a time.
Also, Stormtroopers are pretty badass, except when the plot demands they not be. A better example would be The Red Shirts from Star Trek.
In no time at all your little army of reformed bandits/ or bandits under your wicked command will be the scourges of the sands.
Also I suggest the holy swordsman start, that no dachi is a beastly weapon to help a young would be bandit king hold his own. I was taking down groups of 3-5 bandits with it from the start.
