list of reasons.

Dev created the game as single player only
With the custom built engine, he chose modulus that allowed the freedom of single player over multiplayer. though in the core there is a tiny bit of MP functionality. the main core of the engine does not have it.

What does this mean?
It means that in the base engine there is basically zero options to add this feature. The modules the Dev used to create the games engine does not have the core coding needed.

Can MP be added as a Mod?
It is not possible due to the core engine.

But other game companies eventually had their games have MP due to modding
This is a result of their game engines already have the capability inside them. the parent company chose not to add the functionally. This is not a option with Kenshi.

But the Dev can add this after the game is finished?
In a way he could. but it would require scraping the entire game and starting over from scratch. Those are the words the Dev used. But he also said he could make Kenshi MP compatible, even so. The overhaul would require years. far longer then just starting over from scratch.

Maybe he will add it in Kenshi 2?
Kenshi 2 has been confirmed.
Update due to Kenshi 2 confirmed to now use the Unreal Engine, this is a direct quote from a Dev.

"Does this mean we might get multiplayer?
Currently plan is still no but I think Chris or one of the other programmers would be better equipped to explain the ins and outs of why. I'll keep holding Don't Starve Together in front of him but I'm still told it's a technical thing."

I do want to point out that I'd consider such an endeavour unlikely to succeed due to the sheer size and complexity of Kenshi's codebase.

The reason we're not doing multiplayer support is not because of balancing or design reasons - we've talked about wanting to do multiplayer internally. The reason we're not doing it currently is due to the immense scope of the undertaking; we'd essentially have to rewrite every bit of code in the project, and the entire (already vast and complex) codebase would get massively more complex by the end of it. We decided it to not be worth the resources at this time.

So what are the chances of MP ever being added?
It is still Basically, Zero.
It is now confirmed that this is still basically zero chance even with Kenshi 2. even if someone tries to mod it.

No. Now I have heard rumors of people that are going to make mods that will support multiplayer, but as far as official release goes there is no plan to make it multiplayer.

I hope something of the multiplayer / co-op variety happens. I figure lowering the starting stats/materials and working together to survive the wasteland sounds fun =p

Ya, I would definately love to have a co-op feature. I dont think multiplayer like pvp would work to well though.

Multiplayer could be pulled off if you were only in control of your one character.. Forcing you to band together with friends and the such to continue the game or do whatever. I feel that perminate death for your character in a multiplayer game would also be a cool idea since your opponents are k/o'ed it would be up to you to let them die or not. Just a thought :P

TBH, multiplayer could be pulled off in any number of ways. I for one would love to see this go in that direction, hell, samurai jackish day-z survival with the RTS element would rock. As would the vanilla game, with partys and factions. but that would drastically affect dev time and the polish on his initial concept.

Lol I don't want to sound like an ass towards the dev and in no way am I trying to come across as one but if he really did hit the number 5 spot on sales for a sort period of time on steam at lets just say $16.00 (at number 5 spot lets just assume that's 150,000 sales) that's 2.4million give or take steam fees. He has more than enough money to hire a few more programmers. Its already been in development 8 years (as far as I know).

Just curiosity, but where did you get those numbers from? Namely the 150,000 sales.
BloodL10N Mar 28, 2013 @ 3:18pm
Its a guesstimation not a actual figure. I'm saying if it was the number five top seller on steam and more than ten million users on at a time, Idk what the sales figures actually are but I have to assume to be #5 that would have to be atleast in the hundreds of thousands. Even so, even if it only sold 10,000, that's a 160,000 for possible development.

I'd be content with something of a trade store that has an inventory that covers multiple people's games (if not everyone's). Sorta like an auction house.
Ray Mar 29, 2013 @ 12:10pm
No. It is impossible to make multiplayer Kenshi with current game mechanics. Chris (developer) said that in his interview [check YouTube].

If you have any ideas how to make RTS with "pause&command mode" for multiplayer mode without dropping pause - please share. I'm really curious.

It would have to be implemented like AoE2 where 2 people can control the same civ and share all resources by choesing the same civ and color at game creation.
CovReaper Mar 29, 2013 @ 3:03pm
Multiplayer in this would be awesome, even if it was just 2-4 player coop. Each player can only have a set number of people they can control. As far as the pause and command goes make it so each player can pause/unpause the game. Would get a little tricky at first but the group would get the hang of it quickly I'd think.
[BLA]Unmortal Mar 29, 2013 @ 3:46pm
Multiplayer map every one import own sqaud or make as a group a big squad and make smaller sqauds and let some one control a squad (maybe use some gamemechanics from RUNESCAPE) they have pauze and attack but kenshi is more flow (and for the fans RS3 is comming) i think it can and maybe modders could help the dev.
Torber Mar 29, 2013 @ 4:31pm
This game feels (to me) to be made for multiplayer.... maybe it is just my view of it. The mechanics of building and running around without a set storyline almost require some kind of coop, even one other person would take the game to a whole new amazing level.
