If I'm besieging a town and one of my characters gets knocked down long enough to have a weapon taken I load last save. It takes less time to sack the town all over again than to search for my missing Edge 3's.
regular size weapons...good luck finding them.
But if I lose track of the guy, then it becomes a process of elimination. Firstly I'll check the containers in the prison, then every barracks. If those all turn out empty I turn to the guards. If it's a weapon that can fit in the secondary slot, then the guard is usually visibly wearing it, so they can be much easier to find. But if not you simply go on a killing spree until you find the right one.
But the best solution is imply keeping an eye on the guard. Nothing terrible is going to happen to you on the way to the prison, so your character is not going to need the attention.
