NPC's moving in to my settlement
Hey all,

So, I returned to Kenshi again recently, though I have played since version 1.0. One thing I've noticed that hadn't occurred before in my games is NPC's moving in to my settlement.

I've had various NPC's move in, including recruitable ones, but by far the largest group are The Greyflayers. These guys are showing as "Patrolling Town" and will quite often engage my enemies, which really helps, though my guys don't treat them as allies when it comes to healing and rescue - I do that manually when I can.

Lots have died off during my time defending this settlement, sometimes they're hidden behind a building so I miss rescuing them, or they're just killed outright. However, more eventually wander in to my settlement - even through closed gates at times.

Just wondering when this was added to the game as, like I said, it's never happened before and I've been around a fair while. Also, are there any interactions possible with these guys over and above what you'd have with a normal NPC?

Cheers,

Scoob.

It's really nice ain't it? I'm way too new to actually know when it got put in but it's probably one of my favourite features watching npc's join and populate your town. Makes building towns much more satisfying.

That's a vanilla addition? Okay, I thought it was a mod changing NPC AI. It's cool for some playthroughs but if you're RPing as a band of criminals it can get kind of annoying, I've cut down so many Nomads who want to "rest" in my hideout.

I like it, just surprised by it is all :) It's a vanilla thing, the only mod I use is the 256 squad limit one, not that I'm anywhere near that limit currently - just seven guys!

The weird thing with these "guests" is the AI thinks they're not welcome. I know the "Throw out of town" task is VERY buggy - Squad member set to do it just give up - but when these friendly guys are downed, any chap I have set to "throw out of town" will throw these guys out first, every time. They'll generally ignore most hostiles that are KO'd on the ground.

Hopefully the devs will continue to address the little quirks of the game as time goes on. After all, they'll need to be working in Kenshi 2 as well :)

That's cool. I opted out of building a town because they were always so empty. I only just started playing again. Last time I played was before 1.0

Your most likely built on or near a road and the NPCs are stopping by looking for any shops at your town. They move on eventually.

Nope, quite the opposite since they will attack your gates if closed to get in. Turrets won't stop them if they are neutral or allies.

That's an actual issue. My base is located in Okran's lands and those sick fanatics of the paladins start attacking my gates if closed to pray with me. Not good

Not once had one of my, erm, squatters, attack my gates and I regularly close them. They've proven to be good distractions for any attackers and can often make the difference when it come to giving my guys time to get into position.

Note: I do know what you mean though, I *have* had neutral NPC's wander in, then try to break out. However, this only occurred in versions prior to 1.0 for me, so that behaviour doesn't appear current - at least, it hasn't for me so far.

I got the game after release and paladins attacked my gates to get out, and my squad did not see them as hostile. Just opened the door for them to get out and repaired it

I had one stuck between the gate and the wall due to an angled build. I had to dismantle the wall to let him out.. he was attacking the gate if it was in the closed position and was tagged at "criminal activity" none of my base dwellers attacked him, nor the 6 turret gunners.

I of course rebuilt and changed the wall to gate angle..

I have seen this behaviour before, just not recently - I'd not be surprised if I did see it, however, if any of my guests try to walk through a closed gate, they just walk on the spot, they don't attack it. Sometimes they manage to clip through the gate, which isn't really a problem as they're not hostile.

What did happen to me last night was a little annoying through, a large group of attackers materialised inside my inner gate and started attacking that to get out. They were enemies though so I shot them. They didn't get there by any valid means though, no broken walls or gates, they were just suddenly inside my walls - doing a mesh fix thingy showed now issues to fix.

I still think about the most annoying bug in Kenshi is the occasional teleporting enemy. You can have the best defences in the world, yet when they just pop into the middle of your settlement, there's nothing to be done to counter that. I do wonder if, sometimes, when you have quite an expansive settlement, bit's that are off-screen aren't properly calculated so NPC's - enemies and others - just walk right in.

Note: I've seen characters getting knocked through walls as the knock-back animation doesn't appear to register obstacles properly, so they'll just clip. However, that's not what I was seeing, these are guys just able to walk through my walls, albeit off-screen, when not currently in combat, so it's not the knock-back clipping thing.
