How do yall deal with backpacks?
Lets say Im gonna go out looking for Science Books and loot, I will want room to put all my stuff and keep extra food/ medicine kits. Id also like to level up my crew as well... I plan to be out for a while.
I have 3 skeletons, 1 elder bone dog, 3 greenlanders, 3 hivers......

The Traders backpacks are good for my archers because they can stack their bolts ( they go thru them so quick ) and not take up so much room. I also like that I can stack rations in their packs to save space. BUT, they have a -5 attack : /

So, should I put traders packs on my two crossbowmen, give them all the extra rations, bolts and meds to hold for everyone?
Then just give everyone else ( melee fighters ) thieves backpacks to hold in their inventory to use if we end up needing the space for loot and such?

How do you guys do it??
Im a noob :( Any advice would be appreciated :):)

EDIT::
Also, to make it more complicated: I like to give everyone at least one first aid/ skeleton repair kit too. I wanna get everyones field medic stats up.
Too much to think about. I am curious to see how everyone else does it. Do you guys just not worry about the -5 hit on your stats?

i give trader backpacks to my crossbows, who are also my main medics. i also have a garru to carry stackables.

the combat penalties are rough early on, but become less relevant as you get stronger. still want to aim for thieves backpacks for most characters. maybe one or two with large backpacks for some extra loot space.

Do you have all your guys carry their own food?
And do your crossbowmen wear the backpacks at all times?

Thank you ;)

characters will eat food out of the backpacks of other members of the same squad, so you can put all the food into the trader's backpacks.

and i don't like micromanaging backpacks on and off every time there is a fight. the penalties don't hurt enough to make it worth my time.

I just give everyone the medium thieves backpack as soon as they have okayish stats.
Small ones for the noobies.

As for food&loot, I got a packing animal for that.

I use pack animals to carry extra gear , food ,med packs, extra weapons and spare limbs cause who knows when one of your people is gonna need one.

I have everyone wear small or medium thieves backpacks and carry a trader's pack in their inventory for maximum loot stacking. Equip the trader's pack when you're grabbing books, medkits, anything that can stack, then re-quip the thieves pack.

You lose out on the weight reduction of the trader's packs, but you can still carry a ton of stuff. Plus medium thief packs can carry large weapons.

For food, all you need is a single character in the squad equipped with a trader's pack stuffed with all the food you'll need. Everyone will eat from that person's pack.

I just put thieves backpacks (large) on everyone. The penalties are negligible. I also end up with a couple pack animals usually.

This is the best. Black thief bags for everyday looting, animals for ruin material stacking.

I use a mod General Modifications it stacks a lot of things but there's still a stack limit it won't stack to like 30 but i think arrows stack to like 3? food stacks to 5 and bandages i think 5 as well i guess you could say it makes it easier but honestly it feels a lot better either way.

Large thieves' backpacks are the only backpack, as far as I'm concerned. Once your guys get to really high levels your characters can probably swallow the stat penalties of bigger packs.
I run with thieves' packs and everyone in my formation carries first aid kits and repair kits. You should still have lots of room for bolts.

A bit of a risky move early on, having your crossbowmen use no melee weapon at all with a backpack on wouldn't be too much of problem if you're wanting to avoid that combat penalty. Last I checked, I believe that combat penalty only applies to melee attack and defense, not martial arts. Not to mention, later on, martial arts can deal massive damage. I hope this helps!

i have trained my garru in art of stealth. so every time i go explore with my stealth boys i take my sneaky af garru with me :cozyovercooked2:

theives backpack have little to no penalties (i think the larger ones have a slight combat stat penalty, the small ones have none.) so you can just stick to those on your combat units, traders backpacks are garbage for anyone that's going to see combat, so stick to crossbow characters (if you're avoiding all close combat) medics and pack mules.

You buy yourself a Garru and wear it as backpack instead. Problem solved.

They also affect combat speed, which is the only real disadvantage to the packs, as lowering the other stats only serves to level them up faster. The combat speed is impacted a lot more significantly than the percentage would have you think.

Trader's backpacks are the way to go for stackables. You may want a single huge backpack for any splendiferous heavy weapons you find.

If you don't mind micromanaging the stupid thing, a pack animal is going to be the most efficient way to go however.
