Kenshi
Really struggling with the controls.
I should probably be able to figure this out by myself, but the first hour of my gameplay has been pretty frustrating because of the controls. Between this and the big learning curve of the game I'm almost considering refunding it. I still have some time before my refund window closes so I just wanted to make a post and see if anyone has had similar troubles and what they did exactly to make the controls feel a little more natural.

The big thing is the camera. What the hell. I am inside a building, I can't see very well inside of the building so I just try to adjust and I end up rotating out of the building completely, or the camera will end up sinking below a building so I can't see any of the characters in the building anymore and then rising the camera back up seems to change other aspects of the camera. So then I end up trying to readjust the camera inside the building again, and then something else ends up going haywire. Spent a good ten minutes last night just trying to see inside of a building!

I'm sure this is mostly user error. Have a 50 minute window left before I lose my refund. I just want some advice so I can spend the rest of my time actually playing the game and deciding if I like it instead of just trying to move or see. Thanks

Make sure your building levels are set to the lowest level, or set to the floor you are on. Also you need a character inside a building to be able to see in buildings well. Once inside a building, double click on the character portrait to zoom/lock onto them a bit.

Are you playing with a mouse or laptop touchpad? I think I'd struggle without a mouse

For the camera, the page up and page down keys will change the floor you are looking at. If you're using the independant camera (not tied to yoru character) you can double click your characters portrait to make the camera stick to them, which should automatically display the inside of the building and floor your character is in.

I'm pretty certain I was at lowest level, and had 2 characters in the building when I was having the most trouble with building navigation. I wasn't aware double clicking my character icons would do that though, hopefully that helps.

This game is so complicated. I feel like it really has potential to be a huge time sink for me once I figure out what I'm actually doing

if on laptop, touch pad you will have issues with the camera. as its mostly built for a mouse ( mousewheel ) and keyboard. As AviticusDragon said, you need people inside the building to see what's going on.

You have three ways to control the camera.
WASD, Arrow keys, and Mouse. you can also reset the keybindings for a easier way to control it if need be.

if you have a mouse, easiest way to control it is via the mouse wheel. hold down the wheel and move your mouse around. its suggested that you adjust your mouse's sensitivity as well.

Also another random question. I was trying to farm money, so I went to mine some ore that I found. There is one giant rock in my inventory now, but it looks like there's space for one more. But no matter how long I mine it looks like I'm not getting any more ore? Does the resource deplete after 1 use? I tried mining nearby ore and clicking them in different places but no luck. The ore was only worth like 25 cats so I really don't want to sell 1 at a time to traders.

I have been using a mouse. I will adjust the sensitivity and see if that helps.

resource nodes are endless supplies.
but once you put it into your inventory the game wants to dump it off so it won't let you mine any more. it's a funky action of the game and resource management.

forgot to add. it can stop if you don't have it set to a permanent job.

I don't use the mouse wheel except to zoom. I find it much easier to use edge scrolling to turn my view - which is in the settings.

Tone down camera sensitivity and use the middle mouse button. I've found that vastly superior for camera management.

I set hotkeys for rotating the camera. Makes it a little smoother with directional keys also.

I have left CTRL set in case since it's there by my pinky. It helps as backup.

So what exactly am I supposed to do in that situation? Does that mean I have to sell ore to traders 1 at a time, running all the way back to mine each time?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will mess around with the controls a bit and hopefully find something that's comfortable for me. I probably won't refund at this point and just tough out the learning curve.
keep mining the node until its full at 5
then pick up the ore.
