as formations like your requesting.
no, the game currently will not have that and it is not planned for detailed military formations as you requested.
One question..... Why are you maining Wakazashis? Katana are far more General Purpose, as are Longswords.
Bare with me, this may sound complicated, but you're really no more than a handful of follow orders away from getting this to work.
.....................
First squad. Place all your guys using katanas, or short weapons, in first squad and set everyone else in first squad to follow the leader of first squad.
Second squad, same thing, have everyone in second squad follow the leader of second squad. Only this time have the leader of second squad set to follow the rear guy of first squad.
Third squad. All in third squad set to follow leader of third squad, and the leader of third squad set to follow the rear guy of second squad.
When it's set up, simply issue move orders with your main guy, i.e leader of first squad and everyone else should auto follow in formation. You can set all to military formation in the SQD tab, in AI options for better grouping, caravan or random works fine too, but military does the job :)
A little thingy below to summarize.
[SQ1 leader leads SQ1]
[SQ2 leader follows SQ1 rear guy]
[SQ3 leader follows SQ2 rear guy]
[SQ4 pack animals leader follows SQ3 rear guy]

While leading the whole group with just your main SQ1 leader, if you set him to sneak, all squads will go to sneak also. There are probably other features work like this too, for instance running versus walking, your main guy should issue the same orders to everyone. I never tested this but I'm assuming it does.
A custom formations addition would be nice in the future, but this is the best we have for now.
Just an after thought here - if you spot a hostile, be it a Girillo, Skin Spider or two, or even a small bunch of bandits, you could quickly set the rear squads to Passive, then I'm guessing SQ1 would rush off ahead and deal with it, thus less micro managing after a conflict when the formation gets disrupted.
