What is your character's Melee attack stat? If it is over 5 and you are using a mark one training dummy you will need to research and upgrade your training dummy for there to be any effect.

No problem! I would recommend clicking on any of the 'training' equipment (Turret, assassination dummy, lockpicking chest, training dummy etc.) and looking at the bottom left of the UI. It should show the level to which you can train your characters on that version.

ahh thanks so much!

how would i go about upgrading my dummy?
they no longer upgradable, they let you train out to lvl 15 now

Wait... So you have to build them seperately (MkI, II, III) and the MkIII can train you up to level 15 (MkII to 10, MkI to 5), or there is no MkII or III and you can level up with the MkI to level 15?

MkI = 5, MkII = 10, MkIII = 15. They are not upgradeable, so you'll need to build the MkIII seperately from the MkI.

Oh alright, sorry for misleading you Smudge, I just assumed you could upgrade them. Thanks for the clarification Hatsune and Drakenson!

There are "cheat" Training dummy mods avalible on the workshop that allow you to train higher but they really kinda kills the fun and immersion of the game when you can just sit at a training dummy for a few minutes and become a master swordsman

so how do i find/craft lvl 2 dummies?

I believe once you unlock the relevant research they are buildable from scratch, and allows existing lvl 1 dummies to be upgraded.

You can no longer be upgrade training dummy apparently (look at above posts from Hatsune and Drakenson). But you can build from scratch if you unlock the research. Once researched you should be able to go into build menu, click interior, training dummy. The should be arrows beside the Training dummy name which allows you to select the MkI or MkII.

On a side note, dummies are terrible. Mostly because they take FOREVER. Just take a prisonner and beat him once or twice, you'll get the same result and faster, but you'll also increase several other stats that are not affected by the dummy (weapon, toughness, defence).
Heck, if you can't have a prisonner for some reason, just go and fight a bunch of straving bandit. It's way faster, and you'll raise more stats.

At this point the training dummy is simply useless, no matter at what stage of the game you are.

I agree, also it is much more enjoyable to go fight something that will fight back instead of just sitting and watching your character hit a dummy.
However, I feel like the training dummy could be useful if you have set up a base and have got some completely fresh recruits. If you are already doing things in your base, telling those recruits to go train on dummies so they don't require assistance against every enemy would be pretty efficient with your time wouldn't it?
Also, if you really wanted you could get one of the mods or just change the Output in FCS (though I think that would increase level cap of dummy, which would go on to increase speed of leveling, but not just speed).
