Another World

Another World

For those who grew up with the game...
What's the closest you've come to recapturing the experience of playing Another World/Out of this World for the first time?

There's been a lot of "cinematic platformers" since the early 90s, but this game always felt so unique that not even its direct sequel, the widely-considered-awful Heart of the Alien could compare.

The closest I've ever come to feeling the same way I felt back then was when I played through INSIDE for the first time. There's actually a scary amount of parallels between the two and I highly recommend it to those who want to recapture that feeling of playing this game for the first time.

ICO on PS2. The developer of the game even said he was inspired by Another World.

It's pretty special :)

try doing it without walkthroughs and you'll scratch your head :)
Yeah, it's totally worth its price and it's on sale now.

There should be a thread about similar games but can't find it.

Blackthorne is another DOS game from Blizzard, i think it's a bit similar.

yes i agree Heart of Darkness , ICO, blackthorne& flashback , i also think the original oddworld games : abe's oddyssee exoddus and munch's oddyssee have similarities (stranger's wrath doesnt ) . inside and limbo both feel more like spiritual successors to Heart of Darkness, but yes they have that... best of the "heart of the alien ", was actually fade to black, but the remake of flashback lacks the sophistication of flashback , which was so similar and unexpected(and french) to out of this world

I would rather compare Blackthorne to Flashback, but yeah, similar, and a good game (better than Flashback IMHO). And I would say that games like Flashback, Blackthorne, Oddworld.. owe more to Prince of Persia than Another World.

Personally I wouldn't recommend any game with a gameplay like Another World, because let's be honest, it's ♥♥♥♥. It's close to a quick time event game, and all quick time event games are ♥♥♥♥. And if you argue that it's not a quick time event game, the author was inspired by Dragon's Lair, so.. And also Karateka of the Prince of Persia guy, and that's exactly what Another world is, a mix of Prince of Persia & quick time event.

*visually* I would suggest "Les Voyageurs du Temps", it's a point&click adventure game in which Eric Chahi did the graphics. Graphics aren't even amazing, but you will surely recognize the style.

I'm playing The Way as some suggested, it's a pretty nice game, but a puzzle/adventure game that I'd rather compare to:

-Sword & Sorcery for the visual style, a clear inspiration here

-Les Voyageurs Du Temps, that point&click drawn by the author of Another World - check this interior of the ship as an example:

-Flashback, down to similar musics, the robots, etc

-Space Quest, especially 3, without the humor, sadly

I remembered playing this and I still own the original disks to it. I did not get far because back then and probably still hard as heck but it brings back the fond days of gaming back in the 80's for me.

I played this when it came out for Atari ST and latter for the megadrive. Finished it multiple times. And then there was flashback.... I remember prior to flashback release it was all over console magazines, it was a huge train hype especially here in france as it was a french game. And gameplay wise, the inspiration is clearly there...
Same house, same graphic designer... both fantastic game!
I bought flashback on release day because of another world...
Art wise "les voyageurs du temps"(aka future wars) is a beauty by eric chahi although it is a very different kind of game. If you love point and click adventures play that game! frustrating at times but a great story great music and some of the best pixel art.
Delphine's other 2 point and click games, cruise for a corpse and operation stealth have also some very nice cinematics that were quite unique at the time and a legacy of the studio and of this time for gaming history(89-92).
I gotta love Eric Chahi and Paul Cuisset for introducing me to gaming back then (together with the Scumm team of lucasarts)

Unsurprisingly I remember Heart of Darkness requiring a similar style of trial and error the first time around. To be clear, I love both games.

I know this is a ridiculously old comment but The Way (on steam) is the closest thing I've ever encountered.

BTW wasn't linked in this thread yet: https://store.steampowered.com/app/961620/
