Items that can't be equipped

I've come across a number of items that say they can't be equipped and not due to them only being equipped to a certain character. What is the criteria for equipping these items?

Weight classes exist for boots, torsos, gloves, belts, and hats:

Av and Kront only equip Heavy gear.
Merris, Nixi, and Lorien equip Light.
Skadi sits in the middle with Medium gear.
Accessories, some belts, and some uniques are "Weightless" and can be equipped by anyone.

Items you bring with you into the run are temporarily locked so you can't pre-load a bunch of max life, rerolls, alterations, and banishes before swapping to your actual load-out for the run. I believe there's a bug where items you pick up during the run will rarely have that time lockout.
