How much staff do you tend to keep per prisoner?
Currently, I have 1 guard per 10-12 prisoners or so.

How many guards do you guys normally tend to have per prisoner? :P

Depends on your prison layout.

I have one to two guards per prison block, one in the cafeteria at all times one in the workshop at all times, one in the shower at all times, one patrolling outside, and one or two 'loose'.

If you design your prison well, you need minimal security staff - combination of patrols and loose staff can ensure that prisoners always have at least one security guard nearby , which keeps things under control.
I usually have 1 guard for every 3 or 4 prisoners. But like Lonewolf40000 said it depends on your prison and how comfortable you are with your prisoners.
Even in messy prisons, I find it easier to just call in the Riot Police whenever things get out of hand.
As you get past the wages of the administrators, you can start having more guards per prisoner.
I have one at the entrance (especially at the start to stop any of the sods legging it if I make a mistake in design)one in each cell block, one in every shower (stops fights breaking out in there), workshop, Laundrette, canteen and a couple of floaters (!?!).

But when you get a few hundred thousand in cash... get loads of them, I've now got over 330 inmates( all max), prison is valued at over 2 million and over 130 guards, no incidents in over 2000 hrs.

But I'm sure as soon as I go back on I'll have a riot :chef:
WARNING! please read everything before commenting or hating.

I have played prison architect a while and i have a prison whit 70 high security prisoners. I also have around 30-45 guards (not sure) and 5 armed guard and 3 patrol dogs which is almost 1 guard each prisoner. I have security cameras everywhere and everything they need to be happy. I have small halls and patrols everywhere. I also have metal detectors everywhere its good. Like whit kitchen work rooms the door to the prisons the door outside and door to yard.

What I meant whit this is every advice you give is actual (bull). Sorry for saying it but it wont work. they started a rebel at the cells which is farest down my big prison and it is only 1 door out of the cell area. All the guards were patrolling. There was no way they could have smuggled any knifes through all the metal detectors and dog patrols. They even started the rebel when the warning thing for how much chance it is for rebel was at zero. and still they managed to kill all my guards and destroyed the auto locked doors.

This says that if you are trying to have a high security prison your going to fail any freaking way, even if you go off budget. and 2 guards is not enough for each prisoner. I know I am talking about high security but if 1 high security prisoner can take around 1,3 guard themselves, 2 guards cant be close to enough for 8 medium prisoners. My base got destroyed and I had to go to an older safe around 50 in-game days back.

I am thinking more about these scales:

EACH PRISONER:

High security: 1,5 guards each prisoner can be rolled down to 1 if you have a good system and everyone's happy.
You can take 0,7 to but that would be dangerous this is only if you are the one person only going for the profit.

Medium security: around 0,5 guards each prisoner.
This is because the Medium security has little chance of starting a rebel.

Low security: around 0,3 guards each prisoner.
These guards has so little chance making a rebel that you almost can have a prison without guards :D.

EACH 10TH PRISONER:

High security: 15 guards each 10th prisoner can be rolled down to 10 if you have a good system and everyone's happy.
You can take 7 to but that would be dangerous this is only if you are the one person only going for the profit.

Medium security: around 5 guards each 10th prisoner.
This is because the Medium security has little chance of starting a rebel.

Low security: around 3 guards each 10th prisoner.
These guards has so little chance making a rebel that you almost can have a prison without guards :D.

PLEASE COMMENT: please comment if I am completely wrong I have experimented a little to come to these number. I can check again it if anyone comment it wrong.

NOTE: The first numbers are the numbers that makes your prison COMPLETELY safe you can role them down a little and check the limits.
I might try a no guard prison, bit like the one in prison break series, il have armed guards surrounding, then nothing inside
I have 1 guard for every 2 prisoners :/

Very wrong. You only have 12 hours in Prison Architect which means it's perfectly fine that you're not experienced enough to run a prison well, but you started off by saying we're all wrong and basically lying, which is pretty much just asking for trouble.

I only play with Max security and I'm happy with roughly 1 guard for every 5 prisoners. That includes surveilance/door controls and dogs.
I have a medium amount of guards, dogs, and armed guards. It's not so much as how many per inmate, but more or less how guards are in a room per how many inmates are in that room and for how long.

My Canteen, Yard, and Showers ( which are all shared rooms all at one time) have a metric ♥♥♥♥ ton of guards ( minus free roam guards), then I have dogs and armed guards take on the spaces in those as well, to keep order better.

Other places, such as my Workshops, have about 3~5 guards in each room. The same goes for each prison block which in my prison, stores 20 inmates each.

Using this method, you can cut down on "per inmate" cost I think.

Show me how you do it :o

I need one guard for every 2 prisoners in my max sec only prison.

And danger level is constantly high as well -_-
I have about 1 guard for every 3 prisoners, plus a dozen dog patrols (to sniff tunnels outside cells) and 4 armed guards.I have 160 prisoners (slowly raising that to 250), with mixed cell blocks for min and norm security and self-contained blocks for max, supermax and protective custody. I think it doesn't matter how many guards you have, every once in a while a fight amongst prisoners will break out, especially after executions. My recidivism rate is 15%, with over 200 released back into society.
You can have 1 guard per prisoner and an army of slaver workers choppoing down trees in the other side of the map to get the actual profit for the prison and pay their salaries.
I have kids, the answer is that your danger lvl is so high. Happy prisioners don't really misbehave much. The volitle ones will give you issues pretty quickly. but other then that.... If you want check out my BrainWashing prision., it had around 200 Max sec prisioners with no armed gaurds. I accually have more gaurds then I need in that prioson as I have never gotten around to intalling a single sec. camamra.

Not fair at all. My prison is on a large map as well with no land expansions, however i have 500 prisoners on the same map.

And due to the r e t a r d e d logic with the game so far, i have an incredible number of deadly, volatile and fighter prisoners who just simply cause a lot of trouble. Hence danger remains constantly high until its sleep time.
