I ask because I remember there was problem when game didn't switched between headset/output automatically.
- I did relaunch the game just now with the headset as the preffered audio device in Windows and I now have sound in the game.
- then I set it back to my normal speakers/relaunched and there is nothing again.
I guess for now I'll play with it set to my headset :)
I had been getting no sound for a while on PA, and so I gave up and went to play another favorite RTS, Starcraft 2. However, I also got no sound in this game. After searching the Starcraft 2 forums, I found that the problem resided in the fact that SC2 was convinced my computer had a 7.1 speaker configuration (aka surround sound) and would not let me change that configuration to anything else. People on the forums think this could be due to 3rd party audio programs (Alienware causes problems with this, and my MSI laptop has an audio enhancer program called Nahimic that I suspect might cause this issue). I'm guessing my Planetary Annihilation sound bug stems from a similar issue.
So, I was searching through my computer's sound options and found there was a way to get it to play 7.1 surround sound! The only problem is that it only works for headphones. Open up your "playback devices" menu, right click on "headphones" and open up their Properties. The last tab in the Properties window for me is Spatial Sound. In this tab, I can apply the Spatial Sound format called "Windows Sonic for headphones," and when I do that I am suddenly able to check a box for "Turn on 7.1 virtual surround sound." Once I do this, I get sound in both Starcraft 2 and Planetary Annihilation.
Hope this helps anyone else out there!
My headset has a "hands free" audio channel (for receiving calls), and a "stereo" audio channel for normal audio.
My microphone was set to the hands free channel, which worked fine for every other game and allowed me to use my microphone, but for some reason planetary annihilation also forced my playback audio channel to be set to hands free as well when it started up and detected my microphone.
Solution: Disable hands-free option on headset for both microphone and playback device.
I just bought this game(it has 75% off) and run into the same no sound issue. Your way really works! Thanks
