May be some person who own Mac might give you some better feedback on performance.
But yeah for this game it's good idea to have 6-8GB RAM.
Still, once the game comes out, to play it single player you'll need to do all the pathing and calculations on your own computer. At that point it will be cpu intensive.
Obviously for offline play simulation will be done locally, but for multiplayer I sure there will be enought servers to play. :)

They're optimising it more and more every day but I've seen it pull +10GB of RAM in larger maps.
I'm not entirely sure wether this is just because I have the RAM spare or not, perhaps somebody with less RAM available could shed some light on how the game deals with it?
I really want to get to 8GB RAM soon though, as that is really what is holding me back..... a small game can get well over 3GB RAM use from PA alone.....it hear it can get to near 10GB RAM use on huge maps with 5 planets and 8+ players heh....but they plan on fixing that
