Have a look at the free game Spring RTS (Balanced annihilation mod/game) for now
Like many people I will probably wait to see how this game ends up looking and playing, and the price comes down before I consider buying. Plus I hoped to pay less to buy the game before it's finished not more. But I understand existing commitments to people who payed a certain price at kickstarter. Maybe the devs could make a free demo version that way people could see the stage the game is at before buying it and there would be less unhappy people who expected it to be more completed. Recently I bought an unfinished game called Stardrive for $11 on a steam special, it's unfinished and no multiplayer yet but for the price I am happy to just let it sit in my library until its more finished then I'll play it more. I was happy to buy it because I could get it for less than what it will be when it's finished, It's like a carrot for early buyers (at least when it was on special). Still Planetary Annihilation does have multiplayer, but yeah I think a demo would be nice so people can reach a more informed decision before buying at this early stage.

Spring RTS

There is a really amazing game (which unforunately has some bugs with ATI video cards which I have and don't play anymore only for this reason) Called Spring RTS, you can choose many different game mods but probably the best and most played is 'Balanced Annihilation'. It's completely free.

Also if anyone has experience fixing the tree flickering bug on ati card's I'd really like to know how to fix it!!!! This is the only reason I don't play anymore!

Also how do some of the people who have played Planetary Annihilation and Spring RTS BA compare the two?

It's hard to compare an alpha with a full game. But Planetary Annihilation is easier to get into where as Spring RTS offers more content.
I've had a bad experience with SpringRTS, as well. I also tend to use ATI/AMD cards, but I was most recently using it on a system with an nVidia workstation card (Quadro FX 2700M), and I was more frustrated with the finicky UI of the whole experience. I got to the point where I was asking myself why I wasn't just playing SupCom: Forged Alliance (with its polished UI) instead of fighting this game engine and its lack of AI options or a UI that was a strain on my eyes and my hands to interface with, both in-game and out.

I think it might be elements of what might be referred to as 'UX' (User eXperience), only applied to games, that made me feel like I should just play SupCom:FA after trying to play SpringRTS stuff (like EvoRTS or Zero-K- the latter of which I don't even think I got to work).

I love playing classic games that I loved when I was younger, or remakes and revisions thereof, but I sometimes get this experience where I feel like it's just so 'clunky', and Spring RTS did this for me, just like when I try and go back to early space simulator games like Wing Commander: Privateer, and just end up feeling like I'd enjoy playing Freelancer more, instead.
Lol, actually I was able to play it with an ati card before I got this new one (I should have got Nvidia) I still found it alot of fun, definitely more fun than supcom fa. Sometimes I think the graphics in some games seem too polished somehow and too bland.

Many of the effects in Spring RTS looks really really nice, like the jet heat effect and all the different colour and type of lasers.

Yeah so if anyone knows how to fix the tree flickering bug I'd like to know how to fix it.

I couldn't care less how graphically crisp or not FA is over a given SpringRTS game- the experience itself felt like crap in Spring, to me, compared to SupCom, and that's what I play games for. Maybe I need to give it another try, but it just felt like a fatiguing experience, and who wants to intentionally experience fatigue unnecessarily? I don't get that sort of feeling playing X-COM: UFO Defense for the umpteenth time, why should I have it with a modern open-source RTS?

EDIT: Fixed a mistake someone quoted below because the most obvious grammatical mistakes are sometimes the easiest to make.

So you do care but you're not caring as little as you can?...

couldn't care less*
lol, Im surprised, I thought it was quite good except for the graphics bugs I had with my ati card. Especially easy if you have played the original TA. Plus is has some great extras like auto upgrade metal extractors, saves alot of time. I'd definitely be playing it if it wasn't for the graphics issues.
BA is a great game. If PA even comes close I'm sure it will be great too. I'm still waiting for BAR though....
