Planetary Annihilation

Planetary Annihilation

I just bought PA and I feel cheated.
Ths is a serious buyer's remorse case. I'm just gonna go and ask for refund. If you're interested in the less emotional part, read on

I am admittedly operating on the premise that what is bad now won't be corrected in the next iteration. Main reason for this that what is wrong is many initial aassumptions and decisions about the game, which are very questionable when you take time to think about them.

So what do I have, after getting myself a beta access, other than a load of hype from the gamedevs in the integrated video?

A game that is not only not fun and not really playable but that is not going to get much fun or much more playable in the forseeable future. The reason for this is multifold. First, there is the graphics, which, while allowing for a very fast running speed, is a throwback to SupCom2, which was the bad apple of the series if ever there was one. Instead of evolving more complex aesthetics and design the developers apparently signed up for the future built out of a Lego box, giving us blocky and sketchy units and buildings. Of course, it may not be all that relevant when you go all strategic, which is the spot where this other thing bites you in the arse. Admittedly, in my eyes this game is always compared to Supreme Commander, its most evolved and successful predecessor. And not only it is not as visually satisfying as SupCom still is all those years later, it is also extremely unwieldy. Why? Because the planets, most of them, are simply too large to control them effectively and at the same time too small to give you a proper understanding of what's going on based on pure unit/building signs. While the developers apparently have tried and succeeded in making switching your view between planets as comfortable as possible (without an additional hotkey for the purpose), the whole idea of a 3D-planet is perhaps not something we should be considering quite yet, let alone several of them. Without the minipam in any forseeable future (because unless it works like a mirror-behind-the-planet kind of thing, I don't think it will be of much use) a spherical orb is just too unwieldy to manage effectively.

Side note: even if this is the beta, there is suddenly no track, absolutely no track at all of the meticulous and ownright incredible usability that was characteristic of SupCom1, where you could modify just about anything conserning your orders and your plans for future unit actions. Meh.

Third and final questionable decision is the extreme similarity of all the 'factions' both now and in the forseeable future. I do not subscribe to blocky units which feel like they should be in a Lego exposition (and even then in Duplo section), much less ships that feel like they've been carved out of a block of plastic. I have failed apparently to glimpse this fact before buying the beta and bought into the actual hype, assuming that of course no developper could be that naivepioneering. But I was wrong. This might work out in the end, what with the unitsets and all, but I am unsure this will be the case. I rather think that it won't work, in the end, unless the game is marketed to what I'd call a 'younger audience'.

So on the whole, between the questionable decisions and expectations that this would be a spiritual and gameplay-wise successor to Supreme Commander, I now very much regret spending even the sale sum on the game I am extremely unlikely to be able to ever enjoy. I therefore plea false marketing, and I'll have my money back now if you please. Take the acess away, I'd just like to forget I ever tried this.

Thank you.

Perhaps for you. I can run it and I'm enjoying as are many other people.

Well.. that isn't true. You paid for it so that could be considered a subscription.

So... buying a beta that features all the things that they said it did, where they are working on all the things they said they plan to include, that looks EXACTLY like the ALL the video footage and stills that they have supplied is.... FALSE ADVERTISING?

HA HA HA (It is such a shame that the written word simply cannot convey just how mocking the laughter I aim in your general direction actually is. LOL
The graphics are intended to evoke Total Annihilation, and I think they do that very well, but of course that's pure opinion so I'm not going to be able to say anything to convince you.

As for the UI, yes it's annoying that you can't (for example) delete something from the middle of a build queue like in Supcom, but this is because it's not finished. There are incremental improvements happening all the time, the new area commands are excellent and I don't believe that devs will leave it with an inferior UI to SupCom.

Planet navigation is a little unwieldy but I've found you get used to it. I use a combination of arrow keys and pressing the middle mouse button (depending on if I need my other hand for pressing shift). It has become second nature to me and I would think anyone else would find the same. For jumping between planets you can press the comma key, There is also a mod available that puts planet icons up in the top corner so that you can just click whichever planet you want to go to, find it here: https://forums.uberent.com/threads/rel-better-system-view-55089.52922/

If you haven't played it, how do you know it's trash?
So basically what I'm reading here is, you don't know how to base cam, you don't want to have to use hotkeys. These are all standard parts of playing an RTS. Do you expect the devs to just create a new, magical system that reads your mind and plays the game for you?

As for complaining about the aesthetic...then why did you buy the game? You're talking like your input about it is totally objective, but *I* and many other people, don't have issue with the aesthetic of the game. So, if you already looked into what the game LOOKS like BEFORE you bought it, and you KNEW you wouldn't like it, then why did you buy the game? Did you think the devs were just gonna be like: "Oh let's make an entirely seperate set of realistic models for people who don't like the current ones. Let's just spend a few hundred hours more game dev time on that". Yeah, no. Did you know, that game development costs MONEY? Like, alot, of money? Like millions upon millions of dollars? And did you know, that one of the most EXPENSIVE parts of game development, is modeling a 3D world? It's kind of complicated, and that makes it cost kind of alot of money. So, when you are a SMALL development team, with not a huge budget, whom is going to make a game that's potentially process intensive involving potentially THOUSANDS of units...what do you NOT, do? You do NOT make hugely complex models that cost lots and lots of money and dev time to create, and are painfully expensive for system resources to handle.

I know it's kind of hard for you to grasp the realities of game development, and that you are used to just buying a finished product that was published by a company with a predefined budget, but these are the realities of game creation. There are limitations, there are things which you cannot do, and simply telling the game devs to do things bigger, and flashier when their are limits on both time and money, well, I hate to tell you: you're going to be disappointed. Meanwhile, the rest of us who came in here knowing what we were buying, and knowing it's what we wanted, are perfectly content thus far.
I do feel like playing Sup Com with a "planet mod". Nothing more. Even less since there are no factions.
Just one small addition:
devs wanted to put players in the mood to 'annihilate planets'.
The game fails so far to put me in any kind of mood at all, other than uninstalling it. The factors contributing to this effect are outlined in my original post.

This isn't 'annihilate planets' game, this is 'we have no aesthetics and no optimization and no real gameplay vector except for players' ability to hit planets with moons' game.

Now, I could theoretically believe graphics would be improved and factions would be improved and gameplay would gain a multi-vector model... were it a sprite game like Xenonauts, where the complete re-work of the interface and some visuals boosted playability by like 70%.
In a game with 3D assets I conclude that the soapblock graphics with zero aesthetic value is here to stay. As are the absolutely similar units produced by vehicle, ground AND air factories, gameplay-wise.
I first thought it was trash, I also had the buyer's remorse you spokoe of. But stay with it, once it "clicks" you become addicted. It's highly enjoyable as a team game, my most memorable games being 3v3v3's. Lot's of fun to be had! I am excited about this game and found the price I paid to be worthwhile.
you just keep coming back to you don't like the art style, but there's no way you can claim you were mislead on the art style, the art style has been totally consistent throughout all marketing and hype.

Oh look, another person crying that they wasted their money. You do know that are plenty of reviews on steam, and on the internet. There's also gameplay videos, screenshots and various other things that can tell you about the game. Did you just go on the store page, not looking at anything and then bought, installed it, and stated that it was bad on your own fault of not doing your research or even bothering to look at anything? and now you want a refund? Funny.
I agree this game is unplayable.
Just haters in this thread.
I feel like all the videos I saw before I bought it reflected the gameplay and graphics pretty accurately with exception of the obviously high concept pitch video. You have a pretty full featured multiplayer rts here in the vane of Supreme Commander that is being worked on and added to. Not much you could get fooled on unless you were just going off the pitch video.
