You need 5 in total.
Then, drop down the system list (top right corner, the down arrow) and select "fire annihilaser" and then select your target.
Once you have it, you can fire it as many times as you want, as quickly as you want (not including the time it takes to rotate the planet)
If you try everything to stop them and fail, they could've taken you out in a dozen other ways by now and you should be grateful that you're still alive and have the chance to snipe their commander before they finish the construction.
Basically, it's a game ender designed to take out even the most well-defended turtle.
Once they reach the ground, though, the umbrellas can't target them.
2 umbrellas near a catalyst will take out maybe 40% of a single unit cannon's salvo. The other 60% that land have free reign to kill the umbrellas and catalyst before any patrolling/massed combat units come in to take them out.
Pair that with 5 unit cannons launching each of their salvos to each catalyst, and it's very effective.
Far more effective than SXX or nukes.
