Sounds to me you're starting out very slow. Your commander should first build your prefered factory, then a metal extractor, then another factory. At that point, your commander should do whatever the hell it wants.
The first factory should build 1 or 2 fabbers, then output attack units. The second factory should output purely fabbers, which should focus on expanding.
The first fabbers you build should get a radar up right away, so you know where the enemy is and what possible armies are coming, without risking units.
+ 1 vehicle factory to build fabbers exclusively,
+ 2 bot factories to pump out dox.
The commander would then build electricity + storage.
The Fabbers would initially build metal & radar then metal and defensive structures as necessary.
Dox - when have a few can set 8-15 or so to go off in random directions (choose patrol and then select whole planet). Otherwise use most / all to attack enemy when you have sussed out their main camp.
Let your commander build:
1. vehicle (small planets) or bot factory (medium or larger planets)
2. mex
3. build an air factory (normal or large planets) or a second ground unit factory
4. queue up a bunch of pgens till your energy income is stable
5. queue up 5+ more land factories (which pump out units on loop as soon as their are completed)
Your first factory should:
1. produce 2-3 combat units
2. produce fabbers on loop
Your second factory should:
1. produce 2-3 fighters to scout (air) or nothing (land factory or if you don't have enough metal spots near by)
2. produce fighters (air) or combat units (land) on loop once your eco is stable
The first fabbers from your first land factory should:
1. build a radar
2. expand by building mexes (either individually or as a team of two)
3. assist your commander
From there on it all depends on which planet you are on and how the match evolves.
You also should only build defence structures if you are 100% certain that your opponent will have to deal with them if he wants to attack you. Use them to block chock points you know he has to pass to get to you, not to cover your base.
If there's multiple planets, try to get orbital ASAP and take over another planet completely. Make sure you remove all traces of your orbital launcher after you leave, though, if the enemy hasn't found out.
So he had 7 bot factories and nothing else?
The advice was for the first couple of mins. As someone else stated - you have to continue to expand. So from my advice, once you have the electrics & mex keeping up, you need to increase your factories & therefore increase your dex / tanks etc output. IF you don;t keep resources balanced you will have stunted output.
thanks for all the help
