As far as i can tell spring is a game engine first. With several TA/SupCom sucessors being made using it.
PA is made by the original developers of TA and SupCom.
Tldr : HELL NO.
So due to some interesting host choices in game settings I started a 6 way ffa with 4 of us starting on top of each other... I bailed and 2 of the other coms killed each other within the first few minutes. I was making my base at a close crop of metal spots when legions of crawling spider bomb things started sploding my commander. This would not do! So I had been building some flame tanks and the only reasonable course of actional left seemed to be to walk my commander and army into his base. So I had my flame tanks taking out his factories while our commanders were dueling it out and mimiced his spider bomb playstyle. Sadly I was 1/2 hp when I started the attack and he had some combat cons repping, so had to pull back. He didn't seem to think this was acceptable and we ended up in a double KO leaving the wiser players who had started on different planets to duke it out. All in all about 10 minutes of frantic fun.
Generally in ffa there will be 2 commanders per planet so you have to win that 1v1 then move on to the system fighting. Later on in another game we were constantly fighting over the moons to make sure no one was able to attach some halley thrusters and use it as a projectile to wipe out a planet. :D I was falling behind that game and quite nervous being stuck on a single moon and so could be cleaned out by such a move. But then a bigger fish turned a planet into a giant deathstar laser and obliterated halley guys homeworld so he used the moon he had fought for to take that out. I slowly clawed my way back in the game with some success moon invasions (and largely due to a secret backup base on a gas giant).
The space units really add something new and with all the diverse units to use in battles there are many combos and strats. A few months ago I would be playing spring but I think this will be my new RTS fix for a while to come. As I say though they are wildly different types of game. In spring I would be focusing much more on my armies and just keeping my economies in check, but I haven't reached that level here yet and get the impression especially with the bigger maps macro will be more of the mainstay. The main thing I miss from this release is the lack of custom formations (being able to draw a formation with your mouse by holding down the move order button). That and other little things, like setting attack orders that don't interfere with movement ones so you can set target WHILE you kite etc. Maybe they are there and I haven't found them though I'm not sure, would be nice finishing touches.
All in all I would say PA is a great success!
