Alongside that, I've played Dune 2000, Emperor: Battle For Dune and Every Dawn of War game that's ever released thus far (save for the expansions of #2 because I kinda doubt they're unmissable for the game, which is more or less interesting, but a neutered version of the original 1st game)
Now with all that... experience, you'd think this game would be a cinch for me to learn right? Wrong. The game pretty much is disorienting, has nothing in the way of a tutorial, the lowest difficulty kicks your ass.
Play with people, those who either suck as much as you and i do (possibly for the you part, absolutely for me), or just... my point is... NEVER play this game with AI to start out. It's absolutely terrible as the AI is pretty much only there to help one get better, however one can't do so easily when the game refuses to open a game, due to stupid design.
I don't see what the difficulty is. SC:FA is the best example of how this game plays, but instead of a flat map, its a planet. I find it easy. Just don't turtle, you will always lose that way.
I pretty much turtle, for the heck of it, every game and surround my large base with orbital platforms and turrets just to see if the A.I. can get through but they never can. Always fun sending a dozen orbital laser, nukes and a moon all at once into the A.I. base.
I'm assuming that's my Foundations of Good Play guide. There was supposed to be a video in there too, but the link was broken and has since been fixed. You might find that useful as it's easier to visualise this stuff when you see someone else do it against the AI.

That said, I agree there needs to be a gentler introduction, but it is planned. The developer behind the AI has said he intends for it to be very customisable, it's simply that the AI isn't finished yet and that is currently taking priority. In the mean time reducing the economic multiplier for the AI to 0.5 should help ease you in.
I just spended 2 hours over my first game, while it was hard as ♥♥♥♥ to keep my defense up (rather to keep my resources going) I find it kinda fun. It took me 90mins just to figure out the enemy wasn't even on my planet to begin with.
The only thing I'd say needs better explenation is on how to go to other planets, it's rather difficult in the sense that some actions need left click and some need right click for example when you want to pick a unit up and drop it off somewhere else.
With or without the guide, the game is rather hard due the enemy having acces to all technology while you are limited to 4.
Skirmish mode is hidden, counter-intuitively, behind the Multiplayer button.
