Defense: The Ripoff.
I'm surprised this game even made it here with the obvious copyright implications.

Games "borrow" ideas and copy each other ALL THE TIME. This is nothing new.

Unless this game has literally cut and pasted content from DG, there are no compyright implications to speak of.

Quick - name a single game that has successfully sued another for copyright violations... good luck!

It looks pretty literal to me, I actually thought it was another DG.

Yeah, but a game inspired by another one does not imply a copyright violation. Most games are inspired by others, some directly so. Unless they're literally copying content, there's not much to be done.

Tell apple that.. God help you if you use rounded corners anywhere.

Well there has been two, Great Giana Sisters was sued by Nintendo for being too close to Mario and Katakis was sued for being like R Type and both were then banned.

This is beyond borrowing ideas, 2 games look and play exactly the same. So much that majority of people think this is defense grid 2.

Okay folks play the game first... as I said in another thread the game play on this game feels nothing like Defense Grid, in this game you have to move around and collect resources, and once you get into the maps you will find that they really don't resemble Defense Grid that much though I have only played three so far but if the majority of people think this is Defense Grid 2 well that majority simply hasn't played the game.

Having played Defense Grid for 282 hours and reviewed it on my YT channel and named it best TD game when i did my "Tower defense week" last year I can hand on heart say that this game bears more than a slight resemblance to DG. The towers, the tech info and the way towers are placed is pretty much just lifted from DG which is a bit of a shame. Yes DG is the best TD game ever made but they could have at least tried to make this a little different.

Saying all that I am currently about an hour into the game and must say it's very good. I will be doing a video or two soon on Mackscorner, my YT channel.

DG was a ripoff of StarCraft anyway. Damage types were basically borrowed straight from classic SC Tower Defense maps, like the gun tower being a bunker full of marines, the flame tower being a bunker full of firebats, the cannon towers being bunkers full of ghosts, the missile towers being... missile towers, the Meteor towers being Seige tanks, and so on. Even many of the same stock sound effects were used and the HP bars were given the same colors as StarCraft.

And I say this as a big fan of DG. So games borrowing things from one another does not automatically make it bad, as long as the new game offers new perspective or variations that the old game didn't explore.
Godeke Oct 24, 2013 @ 10:18pm
When I saw the movie I was puzzled as to why new new Defense Grid had a different name. So yeah, maybe there are *gameplay* differences, but the marketing might as well be "looks so much like the game you love, you probably won't notice the difference until we safely have your money". It wasn't until I saw this thread that I was sure it *wasn't* some variation of Defense Grid.

So there are "inspired by" and there are "we think our lawyers can take you" levels of cloning. Who knew?

Not according to wikipedia.
"According to several urban legends, Nintendo opened a lawsuit case against Gessert and Hülsbeck, because Nintendo saw a direct copyright infringement to its new game Super Mario Bros. But in fact, there has never been such a lawsuit. Neither Nintendo, nor the German programmers claim to be privy to any lawsuits. This myth was created shortly after the game was taken out of stores. Nintendo itself later admitted to have influenced the stop of sales personally, as it did already before with other games."

And according to www.movie-cenorship.com the katakis creators were also not sued.
"This resemblance was apparently too obvious, since Activision, which owned the rights for R-Type, was not quite happy about it and threatened with a lawsuit (today, suing somebody because of a game concept is something totally unthinkable). However, they recognized Trenz’s talent and offered him a deal: Rainbow Arts was supposed to program the R-Type versions for the C64 and the Amiga (the latter was delegated to Factor 5) and was in return allowed to sell an altered version of Katakis again.
The rest is history; R-Type was released for both systems and Katakis was altered for some parts and then remade and sold under the name of “Denaris”."

So if the above is true then neither were sued which means no one has been sued yet.
However I will leave you with this http://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/7-days-to-die-taken-down-from-steam.2622

yes. indeed. I've been a big TD fan since the earliest inception on starcraft use map settings online games!!! and I really do like Defense Grid quite a bit itself, I am amazed to read so many people have been actually misled to think this was DG2? really sorry guys. I think I will not purchase this. And thanks a ton to the OPs that had the integrity as consumers to post thier complaints here on forum so I know to avoid this title.

Youtuber by the name of Worthabuyguys has a review vid up. Even before he started comparing it to Defense Grid I could see that it's a blatent copy of defense grid. Same panneling/mapping style structurally, same upcoming wave indication bar, same path indication lines (ground and air), same turret types, and I'm sure there's even more.

I'm not saying a lawsuit war should begin but boy does it leave a bad taste in my mouth looking at this. Just wow.

I've yet to see something that would give it a unique twist that would be enjoyable and get me to buy the game, but I'm going to keep poking around. Maybe there's something unique and redeamable about it.

I wonder how many TD played those who complain about copyright sutff, I read many obviously ignorant post like mentioning air and ground waves as if DG is the first to use that, lol.

A tower defence game, WOW it MUST be a rip off of defence grid!!!

Where is the logic i ask?
