when booting up the game i got the above error

try this:

1: Go into C:\Users\[your username]\Documents\Stronghold Crusader 2 folder
2: 3: Open options.xml (right click & open with Notepad)
4: Alter fullscreen="true" change to fullscreen="false"
5: Save options.xml

Run the game.

If anybody else has any further ideas or updates please post

It works, but you still can't go back to fullscreen. It's odd because this error came outta no where. Everything was working fine before. I'm thinking the game is having issues with recent Windows updates.

After some searching, reading, and experimenting,

I found that the options file can be edited to get the game in pretty good shape.

Go to:

C: [...] Documents / Stronghold Crusader 2 / Profiles / options

edit with a text editor so resolution is no higher than these numbers and full screen is set to false

x_res="1920" y_res="1080" fullscreen="false"

then the game will open without the error, windowed.

Firefly solved the problem with a windows 11 fix, It works and runs even in full screen mode!

1. Open Steam
2. Click on Library and select Stronghold Crusader 2
3. Right click on Properties
4. Click on the Betas tab
5. Write this password in Private Betas: mMUBG38tCcGNZMQb
6. Within Beta Participation, select the drop down menu and choose the Win11Fix branch from the dropdown
7. Within your Library the game name will change to Stronghold: Crusader 2 [Win11Fix]
8. Run Stronghold: Crusader 2 [Win11Fix]
