The enter key only allows you to type messages to all the other players.
I think the only way to talk is to use steam chat and you have to be a friend. You CAN send steam messages to non friends if you have sent them a friend invite and they haven't responded yet. The people you were playing with may have sent you a friend invite that you didn't respond to which would have allowed you to be in their chat.
Did you join a steam chat during the game?
I didnt but this happend : the guy was under heavy fire from the Shah and suddenly above the map (where all the messages appear like "The Shah's troops are attacking!") it says "(TEAM) guys help me." So there must be a way to chat without having them your friend
That sounds like the in game text chat.
If you hit the enter key, a text box opens where you can type message, hit the enter key again and have it appear where the "Shah's attacking" type of messages appear. All players can see this.
Another possibility is that the other player used the open allies panel to summon help.
On the right of the minimap, below the greatest lord button, is the open allies panel button. There are three windows that allow you to send items, ask for items, or send orders to your allies. One of the order you can send is "Defend Me" but I don't know what the message looks like since I never used it.
If your ally wrote "guys help me" I would guess he used the in game text chat.
If you want to TALK to your allies, they have to be on your friends list and use steam voice chat. If you only have your allies in the chat group, then your enemies will NOT be able to hear you.
