I hope Stronghold Next will be something good like Stronghold 2
My solution for playing single player and the speed slowing down is to save the game, then exit the entire game, restart, then reload the saved game. I posted that solution a LONG time ago and the feedback from it was mixed - sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.
As Achilleslastand stated, it's the program & not your hardware.
Multiplayer is a different story. Sometimes the game would slow down to the point of being unresponsive just as a major battle started and all you could do was watch as your entire army got slaughtered. I played with the same group of players and which player got hit with the lag was completely random and had nothing to do with who had a better internet connection or hardware.
No optimization or collision detection in single player and a more stable connection for multiplayer are the most important items that I hope they include in the next version of Stronghold. They shoud look to StarCraft 2 as an inspiration on how to make a stable and fully functional RTS game.
