Game cannot handle redirected folders
Like a few other games, this one is unable to save a game, simply because my computer is a domain client using redirected My Documents folder (this folder is on the server).
FOr me, being forced to log off my normal account, and then login again using a local user account, just for this games is unacceptable.
I suggest for Valve to reject any game not supporting this type of client configuration.
Today, I have had about 6 games out of 100 in Steam that could not handle redirected folders. I have simply deleted those games, wasting large sums of money...

Have you tried to create a C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents folder just to see if the path isn''t simply hardcoded?

Yes, I created that folder (it was not there), and it should not be there since it is redirected, but creating it did not help anyway. In the redirected My Documents, the game did save the configuration file, so that part worked, but SaveGame does not.

Kinda weird the game is able to create some files but fails at creating the others. I am positive those save files are located in this folder.

The save files are located in this folder when not using redirected folders, but they are not there when using redirected folders.

I think the game simply has a bug that surfaces when the save folder is an UNC path, such as when using redirected folders. In this case, the path is \\Server\RedirectedFolders\USERNAME\My Documents\etc.

You can fix this by changing folder redirection to use a mapped drive instead of UNC paths.

Steps to fix this (on my Windows 2012 server):

1). Use group policies (or logon script) to add a drive mapping to the Users folder (e.g. U: to \\server\users).

2). Change Documents and Save Games redirection to U: (it will fill in the username and Document folder automatically).

3). Run "gpupdate /force" on your workstation. Logout/logon.

This fixed the problem for me on Dead Island and Walking Dead Season 2.

Thanks for your help, I trust this change would work.
However, I won't change to using mapped network drives, as I don't want those older type of drives, as UNC's normally works just fine.
