Can't enter basement or attic; game won't save

I really wanted to finish this game before going to bed, but it looks like that won't be happening. I got the key to the basement but the door still wouldn't open so I thought I'd try quitting and restarting the game. When I opened the game again, the 'resume' option was gone. I poked around a bit in the forums and found out how to resume from my previous save, before I'd gotten the key, but the same thing happened again. Out of frustration, I tried going into the attic but it wouldn't let me do that either. And, once again, my game didn't save. Such a shame because I was really enjoying the experience. I might try starting a new game but if that doesn't work, I'm at a loss.

I have the same type of problem. My savegame was erased randomly, and I had to copy my previous savegame over the new one in order to have one at all.

Now, I can't enter the attic. I have the attic key, but I click everywhere on it and it won't let me enter. I might have to start over too, but this is really annoying. A glitch I assume, and it needs to be fixed. I really enjoy the game otherwise, so I hope the company is reading and is able to fix these glitches. For a 4-person team, they've done a great job overall otherwise.

I have the exact same problem – I've got the attic key, but no matter how many times I try to click on the attic it won't open. And exiting the game removed my save. I've now restored my previous save and retraced my footsteps twice more, and still cannot enter the attic. This is very frustrating, especially so close to the end… :(.

I "solved" the problem by starting a new game and choosing the "all doors unlocked" option. I think it made me miss some things, though - apparently there's a note telling you about the pentagram room? I didn't even realize the attic had a key until I found one in there after finishing the game.

I expect to eventually have to start over in order to go into the attic. Still, these two major issues need to be fixed. And I also had my savegame erased - this time when I saved and quit to menu instead of desktop.

Special Needs - I've got a thread going in here with the same problem. Since the patch, the game goes through the motions of saving, but only a new folder number is created -- there's no data in it. So, I either have to finish the game (from my last good save before the patch) in one sitting or start all over. I'm hoping we get some help here because I think it's all related.

And that's if the attic key still works. I may have to start over to open the attic. But I too get blank folders with no saves.

Hi all, if you start over your save games will work again, and the inventory bug that's preventing keys from working should also not be seen again.

I'm also working on a fix for the save issue, but I am not sure how long it will be until we are able to patch the game again.

Thanks. I'll start over and reread some of the stuff. I missed some of the story the first time around and missed some subtle details (I never get everything on my first try), so I won't mind. I appreciate all the hard work you guys put into this game and your support for the community.

Well, my saves are fine, but I have the "keys don't work" bug. I'd hate to start over since I've been pretty thorough at exploring everything else (since I thought I just needed different keys). So, I have both the Attic and Basement keys. Is there a way to fix the .sav files or something?

The same here. Cannot open neither attic, nor basement doors. Very frustrating.

Maybe I've found the clue to the problem - I was playing in Big Screen mode with gamepad support - and the doors didn't open. After I've tried to play with mouse and keyboard, the door in the basement unlocked with no problems at all.

basement door locked even for me. delete savegame, start a new game, check cache files didn't help. i'll play again when a fix comes out, i really like the game but if i can't finish it...

I was having this problem as well. I saved the game and exited, started from my save point and then the key would let me unlock the attic.

I found a secret that ended up letting me completely bypass the basement and locked wing of the house and end the game. It made it a bit anticlimatic after all the build up. If a game dev needs details, just PM me.
