Dear Esther is just as pointless and boring.

What'd you like about the game exactly? This may help people figure out what games to recommend.

i'd recommend To the moon - the game that was on sale a few days ago

It'd be nice if we didn't have trolling via proxy of Nascar-level intelligence permeating every thread. This is one of those times where Steam's moderators could do their jobs, as this is becoming disruptive.

Not everyone has Nascar-level intelligence. Some people actually enjoyed this game.

Anyway, as for my recommendations?

To the Moon is a good starting point. One of the funnier arguments against Gone Home is that it wouldn't have been so well loved if it were a straight romance, but that's exactly what To the Moon is, and it's every bit as good. If you're able to appreciate Gone Home, then you should be able to appreciate To the Moon on the same level.

On a more artsy, experimental, and possibly even pretentious level, you have experiences like The Path. I can't tell you what The Path is about, too much, because it would spoil the experience for you. So I'll just leave it at the name, and you can look into it yourself.

If you have a DS, then I can heartily recommend the Hotel Dusk games as a very similar sort of experience to Gone Home. They're a very character driven experience, and if you can put up with the occasional frustration with puzzles and all, then I can guarantee you that they're games you'll fall in love with. The art aesthetic of the Hotel Dusk games is spectacular, too.

Speaking of the DS -- if you're in the mood for a somewhat more comedic take, but still generally in the vein, I'd also recommend Ghost Trick. It's not got the emotional weight of Gone Home, but it is a fun little story that I think you'd enjoy experiencing.

If you're looking for something with a lot of emotional weight and drama, then I'd like to nudge you towards Heavy Rain for the Playstation3, if you have one. It's a story about people which is disguised as a murder mystery, and as such it's a very clever game. This, along with To the Moon are perhaps the two closest games to Gone Home I can think of. I will warn you, though, that this game is laden with QTEs.

If you can stomach gore and lots of emotional turmoil, the The Walking Dead might be for you. But I warn you, it's an emotional rollercoaster. I advise you to not play it if you have any problems with depression and such. In that case it'd be a bad experience for you as it doesn't have the positive notes of all the others. It's a very, very melancholy experience. However, that doesn't get in the way of it being a damned good story. If you can handle the sads, then this is definitely worth investigating.

And that should be enough to get you started! I hope it helps!

In addition to what Werewolf said, as a chilled out, interesting, kinda alternate game (yes it is) experience, I can recommend Kentucky Route Zero. Very very good. :pizzaslice:

Definitely To The Moon, like many others have said. You don't even need cultural familiarity with the story, unlike with Gone Home.

i loved this game because of the emotional story line. it may be a bit of a stretch for some, but i think i would compare "the walking dead" to this game, because it evokes strong emotions as well. gameplay is obviously different though, but both games hit strong emotional chords (which is their main selling point i think).

Hey, some people have been mentioning some of their specific games, but as a whole (and both on Steam and as a part of the video game market as a whole) Tale of Tales is the developer of what you're looking for if you're into artsy kind of games. Dear Esther, of course, has the same kind of first-person diary narrative. Actually, I'm interested if anyone knows any games even outside of Steam that are like this one more in theme than anything else, primarily how it's explorative of youth or maybe even just nostalgic of that time in life.

On Newgrounds there is a game called Dys4ia. It is a autobiographical game by a Trans woman. Its very short, very good, tells a more interesting story, and doesn't cost $20

EDIT: I guess the name of the website that hosts it is a forbidden word on steam, just search for it on your favorite search engine.

NASCAR is the second most popular televised sport, second only to the NFL. Chew on that, whatever your level of intelligence.

I don't know how you got your statistics but it is far from the second most watched sport. NFL is the most viewed sport, in the United States. Try comparing it to real football. The 2013 Champions League final drew in roughly 150 million viewers.. The Daytona 500 was only viewed by 16 million, and the super bowl by 105 million. Not trying to be mean, just trying to correct your false statements.

I have to toss in a recommendation for The Novelist[www.thenovelistgame.com]. I see Gone Home as one of a recently born genre, including games like To the Moon. The Novelist is just another recent addition, but it's a good one, and it shares much in common.

I'm eager and excited to see where this genre goes.

Scratches and Anna are two games about unraveling the mystery of an unknown location but pull it off better than Gone Home IMO. Anna has some rather obtuse puzzles but Scratches is one of my favorite adventure games of the past decade.

Scratches comes to mind.

Ah, I see the post above me has already suggested that title. Well, there you go!

The adventure genre has been around for a very long time (we're talking texed based) and there are plenty of titles similar to "Gone Home" in terms of gameplay (story is another matter entirely as Gone Home somewhat uses the genre as a political vessel). Scratches is one of the better, recent (relatively speaking) titles. If you don't mind games from the 90's you could try Shivers and Shivers 2 by Sierra. Additionally, MYST (and its sequels) is pretty much the benchmark when it comes to modern adventure gaming.

I would also recommend "Home" -- it even has a similar title. It's 2D instead of 3D but it also emphasizes exploration over puzzle solving.
