how does "create match" work?

I'm a bit confused by it - when I click the button to create a match it's "searching for online game...". For like - forever, and then nothing happens.
I understand that the game is looking through running games on servers to see if one meeting my criteria already exists and tries to put me there instead of making a new match? But why does it take so long and no game is started for even 10 minutes?
My network connection is quite good so it's not that for sure...

It looks for a server you will "takeover". Then lets you play, like you set up the settings. I don't understand it really myself why it takes so long. The only reason for this takeover feature is when you use a password, so only you and friends can play. It seems that there are a limited amount of servers in your region when it keeps searching for that long. I would recommand the serverbrowser unless you want to play privately with friends.

Thanks for the reply, that clears out a bit for me. However, this happens when I'm trying to setup a public game, not a private password protected one. I use this is when I want to play on a particular map but the server browser doesn't find anything (with my filters on).

You could always try to join an empty server with your wave lenght and difficulty of choice, then quickly spawn and then suicide, if you are lucky this should work and you can select the map you wanted.
