To level, simply kill with your class weapons.
Perk bonuses only applies for your class weapons.
You start with a set amount of cash (dosh).
Killing earns your cash (dosh), killing with your class weapons earn you both cash and XP.
On store page, which unlocks at the end of each wave. Will provide you with enough details for you to know which are your class weapons, which are not.
You are allowed to use other class's weapons. But your perk bonus will not apply to other class's weapons.
IE. Support class - Perk Bonus, shotgun penetration increase.
Using a Support class Shotgun will increase its pellet's penetration.
Using a Medic class Shotgun will not increase its pellet's penetration.
Other weapons that are designed for other classes will give you little EX...
The only thing that boost from leveling up is passive abilities tied to each class...every 5 level ypi get a skill point to spend on skills
But yeah usually last weapon in buy menu is better and more stronger...played my first game with field medic...it went well
Things you might want to learn. (returning 2009~2011 Player here)
~ Location of team mates, moderately important.
(It's even more critical now the maps have had an overhaul because the enemies come from events and on top of areas.)
~ Spacial Awareness (Biotics, not so much BurningParis)
~ Enemy Mechanics (Stunning FP and SC if you're a beserker)
~ Finding the Stalkers/Cloaked Units (As Commando)
~ Holding and working out if people are staying or going (As Support)
- Keeping an eye on people's health (As medic) as well as the infamous "Juggle healing"
It's a valuable skill to develop.
Another valuable skill to develop in Killing Floor 1/2 is the crosshair on and the crosshair off it changes the accuracy but it's like learning [see: training wheels]. Assuming John Gibson and co release the sharpshooter/gunslinger perk then eyeballing is a very interesting skill to learn, you can practice it by firing from the hip and seeing where the bullets go.

Yes, people usually stick together. Though their are always a few that feel they can do better on their own, but they are usually a newer player. As you increase the difficulty the more likely you are to find playes who work together as a group, also the amount of zed can be quite overwhelming for just one person. Though that scales with the amount of people in your game.
