Not even close to the same level as KF1 though. Beast for putting massive damage in a quick time into an enemy, but nothing that has me going daaaayyyuuumm like the original. Doesn't help that damage was reduced at the same time default Zed health is higher in KF2. So yes, it is naturally weaker. Sounds pretty good though.
Yeah, just comparing it to other tier 2 weapons in KF2 it is pretty much no contest.
Now if we were to really talk about a quiet sounding shotgun, the AA12 is the one that sounds like POPOPOPOPOP instead of BOOBOBMOBMOBMBOBOOOMOMBOBMOBMBOMBOMOOM
I just think to myself "Well, it's beats Doom 3's attempt at 'realistic' gun sounds" and that's good enough for my ears.
As for "worse than KF1"... Let's be honest, no attempt at anything approaching "balance" would be anywhere near as strong as "Nearly instant death".

Harder than it looked to pull off? Oh yeah. But still the main reasons the Devs have been trying to make Scrakes and Pounds tougher.
Because while it feels cool to pull off, to an outside observer it makes the toughest enemies in the game look like a joke (regardless of the trickshot skill I personally lack to manage it).
I'm not saying it's Wrong Bad Fun for that to be done in KF1 (again, ***ing LOL if I ever thought I could manage it), just why KF2 is trying to move away from that... Even if they fumble the ball on the attempt at times.
"Okay, we're avoiding leading the boss to a door full of more explosives than a Roadrunner Cartoon and instantly killing them."
"Well, that's understandable-"
"Which is why so much as a second C4 gets a 50% damage penalty"
"What. That is some spectacular overkill there. At least give us two good C4's worth so two demos aren't screwing eachother over"
You just made me depressed that the Scrake/FP sounds aren't in the game. We need them back so bad.
Also I don't get people saying it sounds good? Its quieter than the pump action 12 gauge, significantly quieter. I'll try to record both and post it.
Also to the guy that says AA12 sounds weak, it sounds much louder and more powerful than the double barrel.
