Not really, but we as players can't get the things we want if we don't ask for them. How is Tripwire to know we want Ash Harding back if no one says so? How are they to know we want specific guns back if we say nothing? We have to ask for things if we expect to get them.
For me, it's that I usually play a Zerker or Medic. And the game can get confusing if more than one person is playing Ana, especially if they're using the same colors. Sure, I could look at their weapons to figure out who is playing what or just read their name or whatever... But it's a lot easier to remember the Zerker is playing Ash while Ana is a Firebug, so I know who to heal the most on sight. Having to read names or look at weapons can slow me down if I'm a Medic.
If that's not enough of a reason, well, lots of people are currently playing as Ana. Having a large roster of characters allows people to express themselves differently. And if you want to play a female, the same one everyone else is using, with only a few minor color variations, well... it kind of cheapens the wish to express oneself.
I mainly just want to play as Ash again. I liked her.
They did a poll some time back, but I think it was ignored. Since I don't see any KF1 chars coming back soon, (which was the most wanted in the entire poll).

But I totally get it. In a world where you need pure muscle to survive, there should be at least 90% female characters. That makes it more believable.
This game can't be KF2 without her ;-;
Edit: Just saw your steam profile. *sigh*
Bonus points if it's a woman of color and/or wearing some proper protective gear.
