Game takes ages to boot up
This game takes ages for me to boot up, and for some reason like half the time it just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ freezes up and I have to restart it. This is the only game I ever have issues with, is it something on my end? Is there a fix?

Game loads long because it's pre-loading a bunch of files (including the cosmetics and whatnot), the only real solution is installing that 70gb monster on an SSD which even then takes a considerable amount of time to load.

Your game is probably not freezing, it legitimately takes that long on an HDD.

Hadn't played this game in years, REALLY hoped they'd bothered optimizing this lmao. Shame.

I'm not at all justifying the fact it takes so long to load, but the SSDs really aren't that expensive and come with a slew of other upsides... overall, my computer has run much better since getting it. The game loads instantly for me, but in general just restarting the PC or turning it on is also completely instant. I got a 1TB SSD for about a hundred bucks. I wouldn't get it only for one game, but if you are looking to increase storage (this was my main reason, as uninstalling games all the time on my 500GB HDD was getting old) or your HDD is already pretty old (mine was about 10 years old, too), it could be worth it. You could also get a cheaper 500GB SSD instead of the full 1TB, then keep any old games or files on the HDD

Otherwise it's really not a big deal... use the bathroom, check your phone, get some food or a drink, walk the dogs... etc. The bigger problem is loading between matches, which as I remember, was pretty brutal, and sometimes I'd lose my place if I was in a lobby, etc

Cold startup of the game takes a lot regardless of ssd or HDD, it still take too much compared to years ago.

I have 1.5TB of SSD storage, and if I'm not mistaken this games installed on my SSD. They're goated, love the impact they have on load times. I think I've just been spoiled by SSD load times, not used to having to wait nearly a minute for a game to boot up lmao.

... you're complaining about a minute load time? Holy balls...

Well, it's a complain complaint from HDD people, so that's why "we" all assumed it given it takes literally 10 minutes on there haha. But, yeah.

HAH, like I said, when the longest load times you're used to are 10-15 seconds, and your PC itself boots in the blink of an eye, a minute load time feels unusual. I most certainly have been spoiled just a little. :lunar2019laughingpig:

Same here. It's been like that for so long that I don't even notice it.
I always have it on SSD, with the most up to date Windows build, with enough RAM etc.

A long time ago something just got messed up in the code and nobody fixed that since.

It will get worse in the future as they add more cosmetics and skins.

I remember I read somewhere, that it pre-loads a lot of stuff, but when you are loading into maps, it takes less time than it should normally, since lot of those stuff that loads when you enter a map are pre-loaded already.

Someone should Ramdisk this game and see if it's still bad.
Aya May 28, 2021 @ 9:45pm
Friendly reminder that this is a 2016 game that pushes the absolute hard limits of an engine from 2006 on release day. That same game has since eaten 5 years worth of content bloat

For best performance: Keep RAM between 8-16GB and install windows, steam and kf2 on a SATA 6.0 or PCIe SSD.

Whenever kf2 launches it reads data from storage media (e.g ssd) and transfers that to RAM. If you, let's say, installed kf2 on a HDD and decided to buy 32GB RAM you're in for an extra long wait.
Yeah it's all on an SSD, 16 gigs of ram. This ain't my first rodeo hah. Guess the game loading is just unoptimized.

Ya'll gotta read and stop spamming this thread haha... OP already admitted he's complaining about a literal 60 second load time! Move along
